Marketing is the only reason for what?

for GTA reception.

So the only reason critics and millions of gamers find it so much fun, and have perpetuated its great word of mouth for 2~ years is because of... marketing? Damn, if it's that easy everyone should jump on board. They'll all be selling 40m copies by the end of the week!

I just had the greatest idea for a game we can collaborate on! Basically I need you to make a gif of a monkey throwing poop. Meanwhile I'll make one of those "Like & share if you brush your teeth, ignore if you want your Grandma to die" type of posts on FaceBook that will advertise our game. At first everyone will hate it because they paid $60 for a 4 second video loop, but as the number of shares increases (thanks to my brilliant FaceBook marketing) the review scores will skyrocket and our game will be loved worldwide! So whadya say?

Funny that a cod developer already explained how it works. the marketing conditions the audience to like it.

Now you're saying they brain wash me into liking a game that I other wise wouldn't like? Do you see how you're coming off right now? (:

It's a bit of a stretch lol

I don't like GTA games, but I wouldn't say they are overrated. They're simply not my taste. But if players/reviewers praise this game, I don't think it only has to do with marketing. Hell, Destiny would have an 150 if it's only for marketing lol

And yet despite this supposed mass conditioning and a similar marketing budget, COD (let alone something like Destiny, which had a colossal marketing budget) receives only a fraction of the critical and consumer praise that GTA gets.

The only possible explanation is that R* are wizards.

No, that's because gta is actually much better than cod (something that I personally think isn't hard to achieve). the annualization of cod doesn't help either.

Which brings us back to your original comment. Unless you can define that quality in definitive and completely objective terms (which of course, like every other individual on the planet, you can't), then your original statement was nothing more than a subjective remark.

Now that we've completed that exciting loop, I think I'll leave you too it. A man can only spend so long explaining that a subjective is not a basis for an absolute ^^
