Forums - Gaming Discussion - GameStop to Start Buying, Selling Retro Consoles and Games

This might end up well. All in all the gaming wins if these young brats are exposed to the roots of gaming and what made it great from the beginning. Hopefully physical releases of consoles are available.

So basically going back to what they used to do? I remember like 5-10 years ago u could but NES/SNES/Genesis/etc, games/consoles from Gamestop, I always wondered why they stopped.

They stopped because in 2000, most of these consoles weren't in such high demand. I bought a NES top loader from them for like, $30.00. I bought ALL NES Megamans, 1-6, for less than $60.00. I got a SNES with two controllers for under $40.00. Back then, no one really wanted them. People wanted to play PS2 etc.

As with anything, when there is a market, someone will try to exploit it. Gamestop is no different.

It was more recent than 2000, I think things like the Virtual Console kinda caused the demand for retro games/consoles to die down for awhile since u could play many of those classics on Wii.

People just didn't WANT them back then. There really wasn't a thing as collecting retro consoles. Some people did, I'm sure, because I was... but I was odd lol. Now, it's like THE thing to do. Hipsters and kids who weren't even alive are buying these things and that has made collection a BITCH.

I bought a Sega CD back around 2003ish on Ebay for like, $40.00 and it came with Nightrap. Now? They're over $150.00!!! Such bullshit. I am going to be broke buying all of my stuff back (ex wife sold all of my original consoles without my consent.)

Those "young brats" wouldn't attempt to play a game like Contra Hard Corps. It's way too hard and far beyond their feeble skill sets lol

Ah I used to love it in GameStation when they had a retro games section. Before GAME assimulated them (quite literally). No doubt this attempt will suffer the same issues that did though. 80% of the software being football games and the most over pressed dross making it difficult to actually build a decent collection without having to resort to eBay.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.
