Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Could Star Fox U gain some respect for the GamePad?

I am aware that many people have said Star Fox is a game that has merely thrived off of gimmicks, and even though many doubt it will do much (if anything) for the Wii U, I would have to make a bet it will at least distinguish what the GamePad is. Face it, if the games really just sold because they were "gimmicks", then wouldn't it use the GamePad effectively, making a perfect use for it? On SNES, it used Mode 7 perfectly, and for the N64 showed off the greatness of a Rumble Pak, and both those games flourished commercially and critically. And when the 2 Star Fox games released on GameCube, they did not use any gimmicks and were found bland and uninteresting, whether it was they tried something new or just weren't good. And even though the DS version tried to use a gimmick to it's advantage, it failed. But who says that Star Fox U won't excel like the first 2 games did? I guess time will tell.

Indeed. I do want the Wii U to succeed; at least in its final years, but we will have to see. I thought games like Wonderful 101 and 3D World would help put the Wii U on the map, but that did not turn out as well as I thought.

I guess Star Fox 64 sort of benefited from a gimmick in how it introduced the Rumble Pak.  That said, the important thing about the Rumble Pak  was that it could be unplugged easily without taking much from the game experience.  I really believe that if Star Fox U is going to be as successful as Star Fox 64, it has to approach the game pad the same way.  Make good use of the gamepad, but also provide gamers with plenty of game play options with the standard controllers.

The best gimmicks are the kind that aren't forced on people.

So be able to play with the pro controller?

I doubt it, much like no game really showed off Kinect or Move as the next best thing.

That and the Classic Controller, especially if they are doing something experimental with the gamepad. I think it just becomes more important to have those conventional controller options for when the gimmicks get old.

For example, I think Super Mario 3D World is a great game, but having to blow on/tap my gamepad mic for certain puzzles got old really fast.  If I could just play those levels using my Classic Controller, the replay value would definitely go up for me.

Have you played Wonderful 101? They gave the option to use the Pro controller, but it was a pain in the ass to get through areas you would need both screens without looking at the gamepad. I would imagine that the same will happen with Star Fox.

I actually like games without motion controls and the use of the gyroscope so I would like Star Fox more if it didn't have these gimmicks

Yeah, it's a little too late to convince people that the gamepad is a great peripheral at this point.

I don't think a Star Fox game would be the killer app for the gamepad either.

It can give some respect to Gamepad, but is too late now
