Completing the Japan sales trinity.
Originally I plan to have a separate thread for Sega and Xbox, however finding software sales data for Sega systems proved to be a nearly impossible task. As you probably know, bar the Sega Saturn, none of the Sega systems did so hot in Japan and even through some intensive research I was unable to find enough info to do an extensive list of the Sega Mark III, the Sega MegaDrive nor the Sega GameGear, I did find some interesting stuff for those systems, as there's no real point to keep this info for myself, here.
First off, most of this info come from the extremely defunct site SegaBase which was last updated in 2001, in it there's plenty of information of pretty much everything Sega related, Sam Pettus wrote most of the articles in there, Mr. Pettus is now known for writing a great book called Service Games: The Rise and Fall of SEGA, that book contains pretty much all the info that was on his site, the man is essentially a certified Sega expert so I have no reason to doubt his writing, anyway, sales data, what you want:
Sega Mark III (Sega Master System outside Japan)
- Found nothing at all
Well maybe something notable, according to Mr. Pettus Phantasy Star was pretty popular and had a cult following, however he doesn't really mention if it did well, or any clue of its performance in Japan.
Sega Game Gear
- This time, truly found nothing.
Sega MegaDrive (Genesis in the US) also about the Sega CD and the 32x
Sega Saturn
The list up there once again comes from Mr. Pettus, who this time is sourcing a web page called The Magic Box. That is a great site that has a nice archive of Japan software sales, in fact all the million seller data of the Famicon and Super Famicon comes from them, so needless to say they're trustworthy (as several respected wikis and fansites source them as well). I tried to look for the article Mr. Pettus was sourcing, but its not like The Magic Box died, the site is going strong, and I just couldn't stomach passing through 15 years worth of news to most likely find nothing. However I did find a more complete list
MILLION SELLERS: 1
TOTAL KNOWN SOFTWARE SALES: 22.266.583 BETWEEN 106 TITLES
This one is from Famitsu, one thing to note is that Famitsu started tracking in 1996, while the Saturn came out in 1994, so data of 1994-1995 is really rare, and mostly lost, as you can see this list lacks two games on the first list, Virtua Fighter and Daytona USA, guess when those games came out.
There's also the somewhat large difference in LTD for some games, you got to remember that plenty of games of the N64 and the Saturn had unreported legs due to the PlayStation and GameBoy taking over Famitsu's top 30, so for what its worth both of this list complement each other, we'll be calling this one the long list, you'll understand why in a bit.
