Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Phil Spencer - Virtual Reality Not Yet 'A Thing'

Phil Spencer, Microsoft's Head of Xbox, was interviewed by Edge in the latest edition of its magazine. The interview was covered by GamesRadar, and Spencer is quoted saying that he doesn't think VR is a "now thing":

“As you say, there are partners out there, and while these guys are PC-based today, if we want to do something with Xbox... Right now, it’s just been about technologies and things that I think we need to do on Xbox One to make the experience better, and that’s where our focus has been. And I don’t think VR is a now thing.

I’m not saying it’s five years from now, but it’s not really a now now thing. Valve’s got their VR thing, which I think is great; Samsung has GearVR, too. Funnily enough, they are very interested in Minecraft and how it could work in those VR spaces. So even from a content perspective there are a lot of conversations about VR, and I think it’s a very interesting tech for us to watch on the console side as well as the PC side.”

The full interview will be published in Edge's latest issue, which is due out today.

And this supports my decision to never buy an Xbox One, and to sell my 360.

Don't worry, they won't have much VR presence at E3 ... 'promise'.

The PS5 Exists.

It certainly is not a "now" thing for consoles due to limited technology. But it doesn't hurt to make the first few steps.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

I agree with Phil.

so basically what he is trying to say is "yeah its interesting, but its not important", in an indirect way. if VR actually becomes a success MS are gonna be in a really bad place, because while VR isnt a "now thing" its right around the corner, and the big dogs arent fucking around when it comes to it, Valve, HTC, Facebook and Sony are gonna be going all in.

VR is dumb, the technology has been around for over 20 years, there is a reason it has never caught on.

I think MS is wrong on this and allowing Sony to take the lead on it is going to be shown as a mistake on their part in the long run.

Good i see no point in it right now and besides even if it becomes a thing they can just support the vr devices that run on windows with games

Phil has already said that Microsoft is working with VR. They are just not going to try to push anything out right now.
