Forums - Nintendo Discussion - When do you expect Nintendo to shut down Online services for WiiU?

Yeah the eShop is still up, which handles the patches,it's wasn't on Gamespot's network but Akami(spelling).

In May 20 2014, Nintendo suspended the online services for Wii.
That's 7,5 years after Wii released.

Now it makes me wonder, if they suspended online services after 7,5 years for a console that sold 100m units, when can we expect them to shut it down for the WiiU? (Which has been out on the market for 2,5 years now.)

The idea came to mind as I'm thinking of getting a WiiU around the time Zelda comes out, which may be as late as November 2016.

Nintendo didn't shut down Wii online, GameSpy did.

Wii's online infrastructure was built on GameSpy which shut down last year.  Nintendo didn't have a choice.

The Wii U's online infrastructure is built on their own system and will likely never need to shut down unless Nintendo exists the platform business.

Well if people are not playing wii u games by 2020 they would probably have no reason for servers to be up. So I say they would shut down only when most people have already moved on.

That's 400 games to emulate and rebuild the online back end they ran on.

I still find it funny that people assume that the NX is a console and not a handheld well its pretty clear nintendo is almost done supporting their handheld and not their console.

Pretty much!!!

3DS was launched before Wii U, so it will be replaced before Wii U, not to mention that handhelds face a far more agressive competition between the ever renewing of phones & tablets!

I'm still playing Goldeneye 007 on Wii online so Wii U has years to go.....

AFAIK most (All?) of Activision's games that had online are still up. I just played Black Ops yesterday. Those games used seperate servers. EA's games are probably still up too since they use dedicated servers.

Nintendo didn't shut down Nintendo Wi-Fi connection by choice. Gamespy is the reason they had to close it. Now that Nintendo Network is on their own servers they can keep it alive as much as they'd like to

nintendo didnt shut down the wiis online really.

wii only service was made by gamespy. and all gamespy services where shut off because of financiel problems or something.

scince the wii didnt support patches for games i guess it was impossible to make most games work with a new online services.

closing the online services on Wii was pretty bad, they should still be providing them

in case of WiiU,its a total blunder.if Nintendo NX console comes and does well then i think they could end it as soon as 2017 but 2018 seems more likely.
