My two cents.

It isn't possible to please everyone. VGC has had a very large and predominantly stable user-ship for many years, in part because of effective and consistent moderation - relative to other major gaming sites.

There are problems with the system, there always will be, and that can be frustrating for users. We should constantly strive for unattainable perfection.

But even if you have a point, back-seat moderating tends to just rile up other users.

I should know, I've been doing it since 2007.

Silly users, educate them or use some cunning and wit. Maybe a little bit of reverse trolling.

"You should be banned"
"You won't last long"
BORING........

As for me, I like to sexually harass them.

For a second I thought you were about to say that reporting too often was backseat moderating.

Reporting is love. Reporting is life.

Good thread. About moderation I still miss old mods (yo_john) and their contributions. Those were good times.

You mean you have been the guy who has been backseat moderated. Remember, you used to be the bad guy.

I rarely report any posts especially if the post most likely was already reported and will be moderated. I also believe that just because a post was reported doesn't mean that the user should be moderated.

The mods don't moderate every post that is reported, don't worry about that. If it's not worthy of moderation they'll ignore it. If it's almost worthy of moderation but not quite then they'll save it to their mod database for the future, so if that same user is reported again for a different post later the mods can have a look to see if they've had any borderline posts recently and use that to help their decision making.

Yes indeed, there are several avenues of moderation, a lot of them which aren't logged down in the mod history but that we know about. A good example would be repeat offenders, there's been a few bans for this in the past week which have come from this system and I'm really proud of the team because of it. Stealth trolling therefore is not ignored in a lot if cases.

But yes, we don't read every comment so reports are incredibly beneficial. Reporting a comment will never be held against you (provided it is not horrifically offensive) and noone will know it was you, nor will every report result in moderation. If you'd like to know what happened to the report then feel free to PM someone and ask what the result was.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

Here's a question for the mods:

How many reports do you get daily?
