Forums - Website Topics - [Staff] Update On Mod Rules and Contact Advice

Hey there all you lovely people!

So recently there's been a bit of an issue with a select few users making comments about the mod team, or attempting to use their voice to dictate conversation in the thread as though they were a member of the mod team. We as the mod team have grown a little concerned about this new trend, so I'd just like to use this opportunity to clarify everything for everyone so we're all on the same page, and so we don't need to moderate people for something which can easily be avoided.

First, let's take a quick look at the forum rules, namely Rule 9 (Spamming):

  • Backseat Moderating in the forums will also be treated as spamming, as it will derail the topic and conversation of the thread. You are not a moderator, so if you do feel like a user is breaking the rules, report them and move on. Let the mod team handle moderation.
    • Examples of backseat moderating include statements like "Reported." "You should be banned for that." "I give you a week tops." "I've been banned for less." and the like.

The key point to remember here is that you are here to assist us in our job to improve the site and the community; not to do it for us. If you see a comment that you deem to be breaking the rules, then please report it, send us a PM, moan at me on Skype or whatever, we'll discuss it in Mod Chat and the user will be moderated accordingly. I do want to stress the importance of the report; it's all well and good messaging a moderator but if they aren't online at the time then it's all too easy for it to be lost or taken out of context, potentially resulting in incorrect moderation. A report allows the most moderators to see it at the quickest time, and is likely to provoke the most discussion and resolve whatever issue you may have in the shortest time. Our job is made an awful lot easier by you, the community, helping us. So please report posts and let us handle it, because posting in the thread could lead to off-topic discussion or worse, you getting moderated yourself.

It's sometimes difficult to see which moderators are or aren't online, and that's something which I appreciate can be frustrating. The best advice which I can give you for that is to use the Members Page to search for the mods. If a report isn't handled straight away, it is quite possible that it hasn't been seen so please don't feel the need to report it again. It will be seen and action will be taken one way or the other. It absolutely will not be ignored. Just have a little faith in the process and the team and all will work out in the end.

That's pretty much all I wanted to say. There's a lot of exciting times coming up for the site, some very very soon indeed! You as the community are our biggest asset and aide to moderation; so please don't be afraid of reporting.

Is there a direct way to report someone for something the posted on your wall? I ran into a situation where I was spammed about a month back, but I couldn't find a report button, so I had to manually look for a mod who was online and message them.

Maybe I'm just stupid lol.

I have no problem with this.

To the mods, keep up the hard work.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Unfortunately there is no such method right now. This is where using the "Members" page comes in handy to get in contact with an online mod ASAP.

Why do I get the feeling this is aimed at me somehow...

It's not aimed at anyone. It's more a reminder to people of the new rules; because I'd rather that than people think it's OK to break the rules and thus, cause needless moderation.
