Forums - Gaming Discussion - [FORBES Contributor] Nintendo Needs To Get Its Amiibo Act Together

It sucks because I REALLY want that yarn yoshi amiibo!! But I know at least a million other people who do too and I can see those things selling out in a couple of minutes if they sell amiibos with this kind of supply.

That's why I don't have that things, not even Link. I won't support that practice.

Well, i don't think Nintendo is doing this on purpose, but this situation also turns me off.

I really wanted them, but here in my country importers are charging so much for them, that with 11 of them i can get a PS4. It is just ridiculous

Of course Nintendo is short supplying on purpose-  they are not THAT stupid to continue to unknowingly short supply a product with higher demand-

THe game play aspect of Amiibo is not enough to sell them-  (see the "non rare" Amiibos still sitting on store shelves now being discounted)

Collectors are what is driving the demand now and the only way to keep that demand is to keep making them scarce-   If they wanted to allow kids that want to play w the amiibo s do so all they would have to do is release Marth or some other "rare" amiibo in significant supply to drive the ebay price down to a realistic market price-  but if they do that scalpers will get burned and the rush to buy (and quickly resell at a profit) will drop- But Nintendo would rather take short term profit, appeasing the scalpers,  than let their actual fans get the opportuitty to buy an amiibo they want at regular price-

Nintneod is more cut throat than most of their fans realise-  they have been getting away w it for a long time due to nostalgia and a very loyal core fan base but it is costing them -see their huge market share drops in both home console and handheld-   the 3DS will sell about %50-%60 of the DS and the Wi U will sell about %15-%20 of the Wii-   that is a brutal drop considering those consoles are the overwhelming majority of their business

Nintenod obvioulsy knows their market share is way down and feels the need to squeeze as much out of it remainng loyal base as it can -  it will help thier earnings in he short term but it is killing them in the intermediate term and long term

Aren't the shortages a good thing from a business point of view? It creates huge buzz and I think it helps sales a lot. Could be wrong, of course. Even the whole exclusive amiibos in certain stores must affect demand. I think it's a clever business strategy.

It is a bush league strategy that will give them a short term profit but cost them far more over time-   If they invested in the gameplay aspects and created demand in that way then it would be benificial to them and thier fanbase - but creating a shortage is acknowledging they can t sell them for the reason they were supposedly created-

Amiibo is really a great thing for gaming and nintendo, but it's the worst thing Nintendo has done this generation.
It's been so mis-handled that its laughable, and really unfortunate to fans of nintendo, especially the ones who actually want the amiibos for game purposes and not just to scalp.

All they need to do is stop production on the main ones (Mario, Pikachu, Link etc) and start mass production on the rare ones (Marth, Ike, Shulk etc)

On the one hand, I agree. On the other hand, until we actually see what Nintendo's long-term plan is, it's probably best for them to be conservative.

Amiibos are doing well now, but only the hardest of the hardcore Nintendo fans are going to keep buying these if Nintendo doesn't roll out a fleshed-out ecosystem for them. Right now, outside of the collector's appeal, it's just a gimmick.

I believe in honesty, civility, generosity, practicality, and impartiality.

I want that one so badly but I am afraid it's going to be sold out in minutes when pre-orders in NA open.

Yeah I'm afraid of that too. Aside from Toon Link, this is the one amiibo I want more than any of them. Specifically the blue one. It's so cute!

You are touching another problematic point.

If they add meaningful gameplay features to the Amiibos, gamers are going to complain about Day 1 DLC. If they don't, it will be forever a gimmick/toy/collectible.

Just look for Splatoon Amiibos reveal reactions. They give daily quests that you can make in order to get some extra gear. I loved the idea, but many didn't.

man imagine if Nintendo does a full Pokemon amiibo set.....the world might burn
