Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Fire Emblem's new anime direction (RANT)

I agree to some extent with the OP. The personalities in the marriage system are very anime inspired which I find irritating. I'm not a fan of anime for this very reason. When I first saw/heard the SMT x FE trailer at the direct I thought it was some anime tie in 3DS shovelware, what with the J-Pop singing and anime trailer.

However, at the end of the day, as long as the gameplay and story remains good like Awakening, I can stomach the convictions the devs have to live by to make the series sell.

Are you taking Lunatic difficulty into account when you say that there's no need to grind?

Awakening features a lot of rush maps, meaning that groups of enemies come after you. That's the kind of maps where tanks are needed the most and that's what causes the problems.

Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn featured Critical Avoid numbers on the status screens, so the player has 100% knowledge if a critical hit is even possible. If it is, a unit that can absorb even a critical hit is the way to go, and if you use the weapon triangle to your advantage, you can make the attack miss, so a critical hit can't even trigger. In Awakening the luck stat is equal to Critical Avoid (which is not displayed separately), so no issues here either. Dying to a critical hit becomes impossible when you control the odds. Such control is not possible with the Dual Strike/Guard system

I haven't played Lunatic difficulty, so I can't speak to it, but a high failure rate should be expected on Lunatic.

Anyways, I still think that you can largely compensate for the Dual mechanic with smart play and on the normal difficulty, the game seemed to be balanced very well to take this into account. While I never had a problem with Dual mechanics, I did find trouble with getting one shot due to an extraordinary crit which was often frustrating. Theres only so much that can be done strategically when the opponent has a 3% chance of crit and is two shots away from death...

Overall, I think that perhaps more tweaking of the mechanic may be necessary to balance for this change, but I don't think this change in a vacuum is a negative one. Perhaps its more of a flaw due to the way the game structures particular encounters and I am interested to see how FE: if advances this mechanic.

I understand your point though, and I would certainly be interested in a more general discussion of random elements in video games in another thread as unfortunately I just don't have enough knowledge of Lunatic mode and previous Fire Emblems to add much more to this discussion.

A thing that i love about this thread:

"2. Choice in characters is also weak: Is there any reason to have 3 Kid Icarus and 4 Fire Emblem characters? No one cares that much for those games. =/. "

Oh, the irony...

If nintendo tries to put more character from the series on upfront, its a waste, but if they change the character on that same game, its "wrong". Nintendo can't really win. Ever.

"Hardware design isn’t about making the most powerful thing you can.
Today most hardware design is left to other companies, but when you make hardware without taking into account the needs of the eventual software developers, you end up with bloated hardware full of pointless excess. From the outset one must consider design from both a hardware and software perspective."

I am somewhat turned off by the over arching anime-like direction, but not enough for it to spoil the games for me. Anime exists, and it seems Fire Emblem has moved in that direction in terms of characterization. Just something we have to either accept or move on from.

I'm into this series for the gameplay and sometimes story, not "lack of waifu/anime-style centralization" And there's no harm from a marriage system which gives you new units and creates potential relationships for you to connect to. If you don't like it, it's easily avoidable.

I am plaining on having a thread up later about how anime in general is lowering quality Japanese games. Im sick of overly anime junk in Japanese games. Sick of it.

Some of us actually CARE for our Waifus, unlike people like you...

I miss the pixelated glory of the GBA games, that's for sure. But I take Awakening's art style 10000 thousand times over Shadow Dragon's art style.

Fixed

Nothing funny. This otaku level Anime crap is bringing Japanese games down.

Art direction/story can certainly be a turnoff. That's one of the things that turned me off to Final Fantasy... I knew I'd reached the end of my FF career during FF X when I found myself turning the TV screen off during certain cutscenes as the thought of my father seeing it embarrassed the heck out of me.

That seemingly endless scene with Tidus and Yuna playing around in some lake at night with some corny romance song going in the background... That was my limit.

Thankfully Fire Emblem's changes have not yet been nearly so dramatic and they're still great games, but I've been wary ever since ffx lol

Btw, I don't mean to offend anyone who likes the path FF has gone down... If that's your thing then great! The transitions from the sprites and less linear gameplay of NES/SNES to whatever you call FFX on was a bit much for me (though FFXI was fun :D)

So off topic... My bad.

Welp now you made me feel bad for liking that FFX scene. Thanks a lot.
