Forums - Gaming Discussion - Sequels that take the bad ending as canon?

Tagged games:

Hi, VGC! I was discussing with a friend games that allow you to "achieve" a bad ending of some sort, and then, we began wondering which sequels of those games take this bad ending as the canon point to proceed with the sequel/franchise whatsoever.

Most of the time, it is the good/perfect ending the one that takes the crown, and that sign carries on through the whole sequel. The one that comes to my mind right now is Infamous: Second Son; despite having the choice, developers eventually used the good ending of Infamous 2 to make the sequel.

However, there are some games that do take the "bad" ending and start working on the sequels using it as the model.

The only two games I can think of right now are:

· Metro: Last Light.

· Silent Hill 3/4 (It is heavily hinted that SH2's canon ending is the saddest one).

Any suggestions? Let's try to keep spoilers at minimum, although I don't mind if people do put spoilers and cover them in the spoiler tag. :P

EDIT: I thought of Metal Gear Solid as well, but Kojima came along in MGS4 and fucked up with the canon xD

Saw you playing MGS and knew you would say something about it in this thread

I was just gonna come in here to say Metro: Last Light as well

Anyways, I can't think of any others, atm.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. In first game, you could choose save or destroy Nozgoth at the end. In Soul Reaver, world is destroyed.

Only one I could think of right now is Max Payne 2. At the very end, Mona dies by a gunshot made by Vlad. This ending is canon since it follows through the third game.

On the other hand, completing the game in Dead on Arrival, unlocks an alternate ending where Mona survives.

I always liked how Metal Gear Solid 2 just assumed that Snake failed at saving Meryl in MGS1. They never explicitly said it, but every single character from the original game is mentioned except her, and the fact that you're stuck with Otacon also gives the theory that she's dead much more strenght. Then, out of nowhere, she appeared in MGS4 like "hey there!".

The Last Of Us.............................

Man what a horrible ending to such a fantastic game.

Very true! Although I never liked how they adressed Max Payne 2 altogether in Max Payne 3. Just a brief mention.

In InFamous, the devs checked trophies to see which ending had been chosen the most. The writer had originally assumed that the bad ending would be picked the most, so he started from that point of view, but when they found out the good ending was the most popular they changed it. Just an FYI.
