Forums - Sony Discussion - Why do we need Blu Ray?

Uh, yeah. Why do we need any High Definition? I've seen an HD TV and my own. I see a very little difference. As for HD vs Blu Ray, WTF? I see absolutely no difference between the two. You know what? Screw HD.

Yeah...

I've read comments like that a couple times. Most difference i've heard is you can zoom in really far with amazing clarity lol. I'm sure someone whose knowledgeable on the difference will show up here and hopefully explain it to us.

For similar reasons people don't play games in 480p resolutions on a PC. But considering HDTVs are usually much bigger than PC monitors resolution becomes a far more important factor.

The difference between the display quality of 480p/i NTSC TVs and 1080p (and 720p) HDTVs showing HD content is enormous. The high quality lossless connections, far more accurate color displaying and more solid refresh rates of HDTVs make resolution far more relevant.

And to answer the thread title question, high definition movies and games take up a lot of space (both in terms of visuals and audio). 1080p is a lot more pixels than 480p (almost 7 times as many), so if a PS2 game like God of War 2 uses up a dual layer DVD. A more complex God of War 3 in 1080p and 7.1 audio takes up more space for a game of similar length and varierty as compared to earlier God of War games.

We don't really need HD movies. 1080p upscaling DVD players work just fine for that purpose, and you don't need to blow hundreds of dollars more upgrading your entire DVD collection.

For games, HD is a huge graphical leap. Take a look at any game in 480p, then again in an HD resolution. I guarantee you'll see a world of difference.

"'Casual games' are something the 'Game Industry' invented to explain away the Wii success instead of actually listening or looking at what Nintendo did. There is no 'casual strategy' from Nintendo. 'Accessible strategy', yes, but ‘casual gamers’ is just the 'Game Industry''s polite way of saying what they feel: 'retarded gamers'."
