Forums - Gaming Discussion - Videogame Graphical/Technological Generation Gap: Will it even exist?

I've been thinking... being born in 1996, I had to backtrack like 12-16 years to see what I missed in the world of games. And of course, I have continued to see what evolutions it cycles through. But, last night my parents were watching Godzilla and they told me that back then, that was scary to them and that they'd hide underneath their covers and stuff. How lame.

But then that got me thinking. Today we have movies that push realism to the edge. It's getting close to a point where either we think it's real and we're amazed by it or we aren't even amazed because it is so standard. The technology that was used in these movies has evolved very rapidly and I wonder if we'll ever see that kind of rapid technology jump again.

Similarly in video games, the field has grown very quickly. I used to say, "If only Final Fantasy VII's gameplay looked like the cutscenes all the time" and now, we're way past that in a couple decades time. I am simply wondering, will there ever be a gap in gaming graphical/ technological advancements? For example, if we have kids, assuming that most of us don't, but if we have kids...will we ever be able to school them in how graphics use to be in games(Bit wars) like our parents tell us about Pac Man or Godzilla? I know technology always advances, but with graphics nowadays, I can't see them going much further. And I understand that the same was said around the NES days as well. If we are to continue advancing, what's next? You tell me.

They'll make fun of us for playing with controllers and on TVs when they all have glasses on to display and are controlling with their minds.

I am Iron Man

Yeah, it'll be less about the graphics, and more about the delivery and control. The gap from the PS3 to the PS4 era indicates that we are at the point of diminishing returns.

Coincidentally, I'm reading Ready Player One right now.  Kind of a similar theme, where gaming involves glasses that project the graphics directly to our retinas, and players wear haptic clothes.

I think we pretty much are in the limits now, dont know how much you could improve the graphics of crysis, the order or bloodborne

Far from the limits. There's still so much more you can do with graphics. I don't get why people think this.

Crysis 1 came out in 2007 thats 8 years ago. With the right computer back then and with the right modifictaion you could play 8 years ago what is today

Well, seems like it can be VR.
Someone born in 2035 may not believe we once used to play games in 2D and found it amazing (as kids and teens already do) and even that we used to call 720p as a high definition and played it in screens with poor immersion, while they play with VR in 8K to more with NPCs filled with almost real AI and feel like they actually live inside the games.

Yeah, I'm thinking something like VR. Like with Virtual Boy, Nintendo was ahead of its time but the technology to perform a proper execution wasn't there. Now, argumentalby, we have something close to 3D without glasses. After VR, I truly can't see many terrains left for us to conquer. It kind of depresses me. Like, there's nothing that will come out that will really surprise me.

I'm not understanding your argument?

Technological advancements? Yes. Graphical fidelity? No.

Most of the jumps we will see won't be visible on pictures but in the way how the game is played and how it is made.
