Forums - Nintendo Discussion - N64-Emulation on Wii U... Widescreen-Support?

Tagged games:

So I bought Donkey Kong 64 for my Wii U today because it's one of my favorite N64 games and I like these low-resolution games (PS1 + N64) much better on a small display instead of a big TV screen.

I like the free mapping of the buttons and sticks. I remapped the "A"-command to B and the "B"-command to Y because of the different button layout of the N64-controller. I also remapped the "C→"-command to X and the the "C←"-command to the A-button for more convenient camera controls and orange throwing:

Rumble support works fine and I don't need an expensive memory expansion pack to play the game ;)

But what gripes me is that Nintendo seems to ignore the widescreen option of that game. When I turn on "widescreen" in the game options, the game is rendered with an anamorphic aspect, but it doesn't get stretched to use the additional screen space, neither on the TV nor on the controller-display:

A simple solution would be a "full screen"-mode, where the aspect is ignored and the game graphic is stretched to the max in both directions. Small black borders (similar to the narrow borders at the top and bottom of the display) would probably stay... these seem to be the unused overscan area which couldn't be seen on old CRTs.

An even better solution would be a customizable adjustment of the size and position in both directions... like it's done on the PSP and Vita in PS1-games:

I really hope Nintendo will fix that soon. Or is screen adjustment in VC games already possible and I missed the option menu?

I'm not sure, but I'm sad that I have to wait 2 weeks for DK64 here :(

I'm more annoyed that the N64 games haven't been boosted to 60fps and that the DS games haven't been upresed.

Huh, that's interesting...

Maybe it'll stretch out in later updates :/

Are the n64 VC console games upressed? A toaster can emulate n64 games at 1080p.... so I hope they are.

Perhaps a little... 480p max.

DK64 looks much better on the tablet controller than on a big TV

I want to know that too! Was really hoping for some HD action. And I'm surprised DS games don't get any high res filters, the DS resolution is not much better than the GBA's.

Plenty of jaggies:

But it looks fine on the small tablet display

Emulating/running games at higher framerates often causes glitches. Nintendo has shown in the past that they'd rather an accurate emulation than a fast one.
