Forums - Nintendo Discussion - 3DS VC on Wii U -- Nintendo Testing Out a Tablet Form Factor For Next Gen?

Kinda interesting but weird that they're offering DS games on the single screen Wii U (rather than the 3DS). Looks like they're trying a number of screen layouts to emulate the dual screen look on a single screen. Like you can see in the recent Nintendo Direct for example in Mario Kart DS you can put what would be the bottom screen next to a larger main racing screen among like three other screen configurations.

I wonder if this is Nintendo testing the waters for how backwards compatibility with DS/3DS would work on a future handheld should they choose to ditch the dual screen layout in favor of the Wii U tablet layout but still want to retain some form of backwards compatibility.

I think the main reason is that Nintendo really wants to sell more Wii Us so are pushing for more exclusive features to entice consumers

Also, the 3DS already can play DS games so it's a bit redundant

Yeah but it's not exactly easy to track down a lot of DS games these days, why not offer DS games on the 3DS eShop too? It's also interesting that it seems like they purposely chose very different DS games like MK DS, and Touch N' Go Yoshi (where you hold the Game Pad horizontally) ... almost like they want to get feedback on how different configs might work on a single screen portable.

Nope. It's not testing anything. Wii U VC is NX VC. The gamepad is staying. Won't be surprised to see GB games on Wii U eventually too.

You are reaching too hard for something that's not there. It's more likely a case of wanting to make more money

I didn't realize Yoshi's Island DS is on the Wii U VC already.

Just downloaded it.

Interesting. Looks like you can choose like six different screen configurations for any game. I find having both the main screen and touch screen side by side on the Wii U tablet works pretty good but it can hard to read the tiny screen.

DS and GBA games are a big deal for me. As of now the Gba support has been utter crap. With as big as a library the Gba has, the current selection available should be twice the size. I just feel like the same situation will happen with DS. I could definitely be tied over if they focused on growing the selection at a good rate.

saw on the direct that you can use your gamepad vertically but i was thinking how can i use the game controls properly if it is vertical. better to use it via a normal gamepad screen and see the split screen in between.

any thoughts on who tried it?

No, I think it's just their to offer a wider and better selection to the consumer.
