I recently posted this in another thread, and I want to know if I'm insane and the only one with this view?

Games are all about Gameplay BUT when talking about VIDEO games, it is the culmination of gameplay, graphics, story, sound design and setting. All of these are almost all equally important to me. But if I can't get into the story of a game I just have a sense of 'why am I doing this?'.

Which is why Naughty Dog games, Halo games and Nintendo games are held in such high regard as they have a fantastic blend between all of those 5 elements. So whilst I think they are almost equally important, story is the biggest one for me. Unless I'm playing for mindless multiplayer then it's about gameplay mechanics and balance.

There's only 2 races: White and 'Political Agenda'
2 Genders: Male and 'Political Agenda'
2 Hairstyles for female characters: Long and 'Political Agenda'
2 Sexualities: Straight and 'Political Agenda'

I agree, but I think 'fun factor' is also needed.

It's hard not to have fun when all 5 elements are in play?

Did you just say that Nintendo games have good stories?

True but I think a person can have fun without all 5 also.

Well, your view makes perfect sense, but isn't ''videogame'' just another name for console?

If you are talking about those games then you're talking about video games. Or maybe gameplay isn't an exclusiveve term for the video game scene?

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

Hmm.. I think your 5 elements describe what a good video game is in general, but they are not exclusive either; you can have a good video game without all 5. :P

'Game' is generic and ambigious so it's really hard to compare...
Sports game vs Video game
Board game vs Video game
etc.

But yeah, it makes sense.

Gameplay extends into any form of gaming: tabletop, cards, sports, etc. I would argue that graphics (in the traditional sense) do to. Setting and story in certain games. The only one that doesn't play a big role in all games is sound design - but it does in some.

For me, gameplay takes the cake, then story and setting, then presentation (sound and visuals). If any one of those elements is excellent, however, it goes a long way towards helping me gloss over deficiencies in the other categories. I can even overlook moderately clunky controls for great story and presentation; "Eternal Darkness" anyone?

Nintendo games focus first on gameplay, which is why they are my favorite developer. Their settings and presentation are usually excellent as well. With that strong foundation, they are able to get away with some minimalist storytelling. Their games are fun to play and inspire the imagination to fill in the gaps left in their "plots".

A game has set rules and a skill or mindset to learn in order to play effectively.

A video game is a rather tenuous defintion. There are a myriad of genres but most do have a skill, whether intentional or otherwise, for the player to learn. Then there are such things as visual novels and virtual simulators which have no set skillset. I always think of the former being a step removed from quizzes and pick your own adventure novels and the later being a playground where one makes their rules of play if anything. Maybe interactive entertainment is more apt term for modern video games.

That said, I personally prefer games with rules and tight, responsive gameplay, defined rules and a very apparent skill curve to master but I suppose that doesn't make a game, a game in the video sense. I don't think of multi-player as mindless, if anything single-player is becoming more mindless as it's being a case of "Do what we want and we'll treat you with this." rather than anything with rewards exploration, experimentation or overall deviation. Multi-player, on the other hand, is a very much different people and different personalities and different philosophies clashing, often in real time, to acheive a shared or conflicting goal. I can't see that as mindless no matter the game.
