Forums - Sony Discussion - Spotify app launches today on PS3 and PS4, exclusive to PlayStation "for the foreseeable future".

Popular music streaming service Spotify has just launched its first-ever games console app - and it's exclusive to Sony's PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 for the time being.

"PlayStation have gaming exclusivity," Murray Pannell, UK marketing director for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, confirmed to Eurogamer at a preview of the app last week. And how long does the exclusivity period last? "That's to be decided exactly," he confessed, "but certainly for the foreseeable."

The app looks very different to existing versions of Spotify, with a horizontal arrangement tailored to TV use. 'We've done integration with early smart TV platforms, but this is by far our most sophisticated big-screen experience to date.'

The Spotify app is available now - from 10am, Monday 30th March - in 41 markets worldwide, including the UK. It's free and most PS4 users will find it's on their consoles already, replacing Music Unlimited in the menu. It was a hidden background download in last week's system update.

Just the exclusive I wanted on PS4, thanks Sony.

Nice. I think eventually it will come everywhere, but I'm still only going to use it on my phone or perhaps tablet.

Here is more info from the PlayStation.blog

Hi everyone! In January, we announced PlayStation Music, a new music destination that brings Spotify to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 systems, and Xperia mobile devices in 41 markets around the world. This exclusive partnership brings the best in music and the best in gaming together on PlayStation Network, and I am thrilled to announce that Spotify on PlayStation Music is coming to the PS4 and PS3 systems today!

Spotify is the exclusive partner of PlayStation Music, and with more than 30 million songs and 1.5 billion playlists, PS4 users can soundtrack their gaming sessions with their favourite songs. To make controlling your music even easier, PS4 and PS3 users will be able to take advantage of the Spotify Connect feature on the official Spotify app for Android/iOS. You can select a playlist, skip songs, adjust the volume, and more.

PlayStation Network users can easily link their accounts to Spotify and use their account to subscribe to Spotify’s Premium service, which is available for £9.99/month. If you want to check out Spotify’s Premium service first, we have the following offers in place:

  • Music Unlimited subscribers with accounts active as of 29th March 2015, will receive a free two-month trial to Spotify Premium
  • New and existing Spotify users who have not previously received a trial of Spotify Premium can receive 1 month free

This is just the beginning of Spotify on PlayStation Music, which will continue to evolve. We are working with the team at Spotify to bring new and exciting features exclusively to our platforms.

Though most Spotify users will already be using their phone, tablet, pc or music system to access it, at least this allows music while you play fo you like that kind of thing.

Are you saying that people can't use spotify on PS4 while they play or is it just bad wording?

Sounds interesting. I would love to have custom soundtracks for games like Driveclub. Will need to check they have enough of the stuff I like though first

And i bet that just like music unlimited i wont be able to use it because i dont live in the U.S...

exclusive? well i suppose i can't complain too much since i'm a ps4 user but this is just as stupid ms's netflix exclusivity period on 360 or sling tv on xbox one or hbo now on apple tv.

when will these services learn that being on every device possible is better than exclusivity.

nope, i'm kind of mad now. whatever money sony spent on this exclusivity is a waste. all the same,. i'm happy to have this on my ps4 though.

he's just downplaying its relavance because other devices can also play spotify.  i disagree with that view.  i have 6 devices that can play netflix but having it on ps4 is worth a lot to me because my wii and smart tv and iphone and ipad and even ps3 are all far shittier experiences.

i'm happy for spotify but in all honesty i'd kill for pandora and especially amazon cloud music apps.  i'll wager with this "exclusivity" i won't be getting those "for the foreseeable future".
