As everyone knows, each generation Nintendo consoles sell less and less. NES 61 million, SNES 49 million, N64 32 million (despite massive European markets now), GameCube 22 million. Then of course the Wii takes everyone by surprise and sells 85 million in 4 years, crushing all sales records. Nintendo was on top period. Even Microsoft and Sony tried to copy them with the Kinect and Move respectively. Mario Kart, Super Mario, Zelda, Smash Bros., etc. etc. were all in their sales prime. Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit sold a trillion copies.
However, it seems that was just an anamoly as the Wii U has failed to even outsell the Dreamcast so far. It will be lucky to reach half of the GameCube's sales. Recently Nintendo has finally acknowledged the Wii U has failed to even remotely meet sales expectations. Usually they were in denial about it (one game can change its fortunes!) but now they have admitted it.
Nintendo recently announced the NX and Quality of Life systems. This shows to me they want Wii magic again. They say QOL is separate but now I am thinking they are going to combine their next console with it.
So this delay makes sense. Twilight Princess was delayed for the Wii, and no one was mad because no one owned a GameCube anyway (don't get me wrong it's amazing but it wasn't that popular). TP at launch was huge - Wii Sports was for the non-gamers, so what about the hardcore gamers? What better to launch than with a frickin Zelda? Genius decision. So why not have Zelda start the NX hot? The only things that can surpass a Zelda for launch are a full fledged 3D Mario game., Smash Bros. or Mario Kart, but those probably won't be ready in time for a launch.
The main problem with the Wii U is not just the software drought, but the lack of feeling the need to buy one. Most casuals don't need an extra Mario Kart; Mario Kart Wii is enough. New Super Mario Bros. U doesn't look anything different from New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Smartphone games succeed because there's usually one main version then a bunch of crappy spin offs. Super popular smartphone games rarely have direct sequels. Now Niintendo can use crappy smartphone titles to connect to the NX games as well. They want some of that Wii audience back.
I am beyond excited for Nintendo's next console now. I have a feeling they're going to make it a must have like the Wii. Their recent statements and decisions (Wii U fails, Zelda delayed, Quality of Life) have shown they are nostalgic for Wii success and this time will try to replicate it. Of course, first thing they are probably going to do - and should - is drop the Wii brand name. It's toxic at this point.
What do you guys think? Does Nintendo have another Wii up their sleeve?
