Forums - Gaming Discussion - Will Ocarina of Time ever Be Surpassed and When?

OoT has clearly already been surpassed. By many games in fact. Most recent Zelda games are far superior.

Everything is relative. A 99 on metacritic in 1999 means nothing for today's standards.

No becasue nowadays everyone has an opinion. reviews are not based on the same critiria and now more then ever are very personal.

i am sure that someone review something different just to a make a point to be different.

the world has changed, so has reviews and people brains.

Switch!!!

Super Mario 64 > Zelda OOT
:P

Ocarina isn't all that good, even compared to just the other games in its own series. A Link to the Past had more content and exploration, Majora's Mask had better narrative flow and atmosphere, Wind Waker was the better Zelda game all around, and none of them are perfect games by any stretch of the imagination.

Ocarina was, however, a historic game. It pioneered half the controls we now take for granted for 3D games, and in that regard, yes, it will always be important.

Lol what?

Wind Waker? That was a good game, but come on, better than Ocarina of Time? Wind Waker was at best an average Zelda game. I like it too, but OOT blows it out of the water. Wind Waker was too easy, short, and an ugly art style. Not to mention too much padding. Wind Waker is a great 9.3/10, but OOT is a true 10/10.

Wind Waker is like the Super Mario Sunshine of the series. A great game, but too different.

And Majora's Mask, I don't know where the hype for this game came along. I am guessing it was the creepy pasta from a couple years ago.

Lol, who is talking about metracritic? Check any greatest games of all time list and OOT is almost always #1. Many modern Zeldas dont crack 100. Zelda OOT is also most widely considered greatest game of all time in polls of gamers themselves.

People don't understand why OoT won't be surpased. It's not because it has the best gameplay, or has the best story, or the best graphics, or the highest metacritic, or combination of those or whatever else.

It's because it was basically those above at the time it came out and when 3D games were new.

No game no matter how amazing will surpass it in the 3D gaming. It's like the Lord of the Rings is for fantasy books. OoT is that for 3D games.

Tetris or something could be the 2D king.

We have to wait till the next medium for another King. Thought maybe it could be like Wii Sports, but seems that the Motion died, or is too early to bring in. Maybe this virtual reality will be the next thing, or a combination of both. But it will need to be something beyond just the 3D gmaes we have been getting since like 1998 or whenever N64, PS1, Dreamcast came out.

Gamers who weren't around when the transition from 2D to 3D happened wont' understand why OoT is and will be King forever.

Most GOAT lists also give random constrictions, like "one game per series," because spreading the wealth is better than accuracy to those writers. Hence why you'll usually only see OoT and LttP on lists, because they're gimme picks. Since TLoU came out, it's more often than not ended up #1 on many GOAT lists, whether it deserves that distinction or not

Polls are also hard to consider accurate because of sample size. VGC's own poll recently put MM above OoT.

OoT WAS surpassed years ago. Once the nostalgia wave blows over and the 90s kids stop shouting the loudest, that will be clear. And that's coming from one of those 90's kids. OoT was one of the most significant games of all time, probably only below Super Mario Bros., but certainly not the greatest nowadays. After all, SMB was considered the greatest game of all time until a new wave of young'ns got to start screaming their favorites at everybody (LttP). And then FFVII/OoT. And now TLoU. Doesn't mean any of these games deserved that distinction necessarily, just means people are good at shouting.

You should check out my YouTube channel, The Golden Bolt!  I review all types of video games, both classic and modern, and I also give short flyover reviews of the free games each month on PlayStation Plus to tell you if they're worth downloading.  After all, the games may be free, but your time is valuable!

In terms of quality its been surpassed many times over by now. In terms of critical scores? Doubtful, if only because one of the game's big advantages is that it only has about 30 reviews. Most games tend to get double that, and there are always inevitably scores from a few sites that weren't even around when OoT was reviewed that will bring it down.
