OoT is still the game most widely considered to be the greatest of all time in most annual GOAT game countdowns. Obviously opinions differ and you might think it has already been surpassed, but the question is - when do you think a game will come along that will surpass OoT as far as being more widely considered as the greatest game ever?

Yeah many times over:

FF7

MGS

Shadow of the Colossus

Half Life 2

The Last of Us

and soon Bloodborne

The only one I can actually see being argued is FF7.  MGS, while very highly rated, is not regarded quite the same way.  I would say GTA better fits than MGS.  Shadow of the Colossus is more "cult hit" than "Globally loved."  I can't say for sure about Half Life 2, but I don't think it fits the bill.   It would be way too early to say Bloodborne, given that a lot of hype-talk will be involved.

edit: Let me be clear that this isn't based off of my own opinions of the games, but based off of reception from gamers in general.

Of course it will. A good game. Unfortunately, since there will always be strong opinions, differences and the nostalgia factor, the gaming community in general will never accept any game as better as ocarina of time.

I doubt it, but in the near future I only see 2 games with potential (Zelda U and FFXV - they're quite unique).

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

Personally I can't understand how it even gets into any GOAT list, let alone makes it all the way to the top. The game is a 6.5/10 for me.

It seems to me like there is brainwashing going on there is an unwritten rule that says in every GOAT list OoT must always be at the top. even if you don't personally like it you are obliged to make it the #1 game otherwise your membership will be cancelled.

But to answer the question, because of the rule of OoT, there will never come a time when the majority of GOAT lists won't have OoT at #1.

It's my least favorite 3D Zelda game, but you have got to be kidding me if you can't see why people choose it as their favorite video game. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean other people don't and there is some giant conspiracy to pretend a shitty game is the best game ever.

There is a huge difference between recognising that some people really love the game (my son really loves the game and it is ONE of his favourites, but not his absolute favourite), and accepting that it is widely regarded as the greatest game ever made (just think about the enormity of that statement). I am fine with people loving the game I just cannot understand how it is so widely regarded as the GOAT without there being some sort of group-think influence going on.

I actually part own my son's 3DS because I wanted to get 3DS specifically so I could finally play the greatest game ever, according to most GOAT lists. Boy, imagine my disappointment when I could not even be bothered finishing it.

It ain't my GOAT. Many games have come that have left a bigger impression than ocarina of time.

It has. The game is called The Last of Us.

I'm so disappointed in everyone who don't believe that it can happen any time soon. I'm sure it won't be soon, but I believe it will be soon enough. That dude that mentioned 2d to 3d as one of the grandest transition that OOT surpassed, has no imagination. Part of the reason why OOT is given the GOAT title many times over is because it is the grandest giant on which other games stand on the shoulder of. But, that does not mean that another game can't revolutionize gaming like OOT did. Look at the technologies we have today and tell me that it isn't leading to a melting pot of artistic and technical marvel that a Game will some day take advantage of.

For instance, we may have run out the gamuts of how shiny the pictures are, but what about gameplay? Gameplay was what made OOT in the first place, in videogames, Gameplay is king. Certainly with the right combinations we may see another OOT.

Look at what OOT did to capture the overall consensus that made it GOAT. Story was wonderful. Music was engrossing. The charm of the characters and their design. The narrative one follows to get to the next phase of gameplay. Then you have the technical stuff like camera, like the target system, the fighting mechanics, the plethora of minigames and sub-plots, the trading system that got you the Goron sword. The masterful coding and working on the strengths and weaknesses of the system to make it work for OOT's advantage. Certainly I'm not saying to plagiarize any of these, but maybe to emulate some of OOT's core mechanics.

There's the 3D visors coming up in the future that may just be the change of the gaming landscape. Perhaps it's Nintendo's heart monitor that no one thinks can be transformed into a gaming device. Perhaps we'll be able to play neural game controls.

As much as I want TLoZ:OOT to be forever cemented as GOAT, that only means that's as far as we got in the greatness of gaming. As SMB was Goat, and so SMB3 was Goat and then OOT was goat, we'll have another GOAT.

By current standards, OoT has likely been beaten by several games already and may have aged poorly, but upon its first release, it may have been a major deal, gaining praise from almost everyone in the industry and leaving maybe people in awe of it. With how the industry is now, it seems almost impossible that a game will reach the status that OoT set during its time. Who knows, maybe it`ll happen.

I think there is a list of 20 or so games that are considered "acceptable choices" for the top video game of all time, and if you list doesnt have one of those choices then you list loses a lot of credit. I believe this list includes:

Ocarina of Time
A link to the Past
Super Metroid
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy VII
Half Life 2
Super Mario Bros 3
Super Mario Bros
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario 64
Shadow of The Colossus
The Last of Us
Metal Gear Solid
Resident Evil 4

Theres some more that might be too soon to say for sure... aka Fallout 3, Skyrim, Last of Us etc...

I would hardly consider OoT to be "the greatest game of all time". An argument can certainly be made for it being ONE of, but not THE (unless we're just talking objective "my favorite game is...." opinion).

As far as jump from 2D to 3D, OoT certainly was a massive leap and achievement, for sure. There really was no other game on any other console comparable that gen. However, Mario 64 was the real MASSIVE "2D to 3D" game. OoT may have been prettier to look at, but Mario 64's mechanics were gold, and really sold millions of gamers on 3D gaming. Which was both good and bad. Good, because M64 showed how GOOD 3D gaming could be done. But also bad, because it only further caused developers (Nintendo included) to prematurely abandon 2D gaming, just when masterpieces like Yoshi's Island and Symphony of the Night were coming out. So much more could have (and should have) been done with 2D gaming during that N64/PSX gen. But I digress.

OoT is a great game, and deserves most of it's praise. However, personally, I don't even consider it the best 3D Zelda. To me, the GC version of Twilight Princess surpassed it, in that it was a very OoT like game, but was better and had more in almost every way. No 3D Zelda has yet to surpass TP to me. We'll see if this Wii U game can, but I won't hold my breath till I actually see (and play) the final form.
