Forums - Gaming Discussion - Will Ocarina of Time ever Be Surpassed and When?

If people weren't deluded by nostalgia it wouldn't even be considered the best Zelda game, let alone one of or THE best game of all time, lmao.

Only a Zelda game can dethrone a Zelda game. It's the law fo videogames.

Proud to be the first cool Nintendo fan ever

Number ONE Zelda fan in the Universe

DKCTF didn't move consoles

Prediction: No Zelda HD for Wii U, quietly moved to the succesor

Predictions for Nintendo NX and Mobile

Like others in this thread have said, it's going to take a big jump like from 2D to 3D, and I think that if/when Nintendo releases a console dedicated to virtual reality then the Zelda game that comes with it has the potential to be the game that shows off how good a virtual reality game can be.

Even as I agree wth him and can understand your taste, Ico over SotC? Damn that's a hard one to let pass

I always found SoTC very boring, to be honest.

As long as video game developers keep playing it safe and refuse to spend a decent chunk of money on new, creative ideas it will never happen. All games developed are compared to previous games of its genre, which means that defenders of the old will always protest whenever a new title attempts to claim the throne.

Ocarina of Time was the first of its kind, perfectly incorporating RPG, Adventure, Puzzle and even FPS elements into a 3D setting. Surpassing that achievement is simply impossible as long as video game development remains as stagnant as it is today. Larger worlds, more pixels and more complex stories will not impress future generations.

I'm tempted to hit the report button right now

DO IT!!11!11!!!

i think the primary reason OoT gained the notoriety that it did was just because it was revolutionary in terms of being one of the first notable "open-world" (obviously that term has kind of changed) 3D adventure games.

aside from that point i think its entire legacy is painted by nostalgia. the game has aged poorly and so i do think in that regard once the generation that reminisces on it gets a bit older and a newer generation ages its legacy will diminish somewhat.

It was surpassed before it came out...even in it's own series.

Lube Me Up

I doubt any game will surpass Oot in metacritics (average scores). First of all back then there were way fewer trolls (Way less 6/10 BS than today). Second critics back then seem to have had a completely different set of tools available to jdge a game. Third 14% of the reviewrs were "Nintendo something".

Disclaimer: I friggin loved OoT (My fav game...after Shenmue 1+2) was let down by MM loathed WW and thought TP was mediocre.

Yup...RO friggin rocked

The thing about OOT is that it was such a major game back in 1998. I don't think it's the best game ever or even the best Zelda game ever, but it was such an influence and just so massive and well-done for a game in 1998 (I don't think it has aged that well but it's still good) that I find it hard for any new game today to be as revered upon its release. Maybe a virtual reality game? Still, like others have said, the lists are so subjective. Plenty of games I think are top tier (DKC2/TF, Bastion,  Okami, Seiken Densetsu 3, Yoshi's Island, Demon's Souls, Planescape Torment, SMT Nocturne, Ever17,  and many others) are rarely if ever on lists. Doesn't mean they aren't as deserving or somehow not as good.
