Forums - Politics Discussion - Jeremy Clarkson dropped from Top Gear, BBC confirms

I've been watching some episodes of Top Gear on Netflix to honor the trio who will likely soon be looking for new work. Currently watching the India special, just laughed so hard it hurt when Richard accidentally painted the Mexican flag on his car instead of the Indian flag. Man I hope another network will pick the 3 of them up for a new show.

There's so many good things to say about Top Gear that I wouldn't even be able to point out one great moment, because all of it is great.

This is one that I always remember as one of the funniest moments from the show that i've seen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZlY_YtUjuc

Yeah, hopefully another network gets all 3 of them so they can continue their adventures. Until then here's another video to remember the good times on the show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5GJLBE-9Cs

Sounds like Clarkson was waling on thin ice for years.
I'm sure BBC realize what a loss it is for them, but they had to draw the line somewhere.

I hear his co-hosts said they'll leave too if he goes, and if that happens I'm sure the three of them will have no problem finding a new lucrative job.
So I don't think Clarkson is too upset about this. He's probably drowining in offers.

Agree, BBC was d0m3d from the start, as it has a reputation to defend, it's not by chance that it's the most renowned state TV in the world and one of the best also ranking both public and private networks. Italian state TV OTOH, once started going down a slippery slope just for easy audience (and political games and share-out behind the scenes), it never recovered its lost reputation. BBC managers must have quite clear in their mind the possible scenario if they start taking easy and popular, but morally wrong decisions.
BTW, I hope Clarkson went too far just for his over inflated ego, and not something worse like cocaine, as in the former case what happened could teach him a lesson, in the latter it could be the beginning of his end.

The Inbetweeners. Mr Bean. Monty Python. Ah nvm they're all over now :(

Yep, those were all good shows as well. Also Keeping Up Appearances was really good, which has been over for a long time now. All BBC has left for me now is Sherlock.

Blackadder was good.Overall their output was far better in the past than nowdays.

1 of 2 scenarios will no doubt happen.

1) Faced with the prospect of may and hammond leaving, clarkson will be reinstanted, following media focus on he and the guy he punched "settling their differences", and lots of reminding everyone that jeremy is on his last chance, again, this being either before the 2016 season starts or midway through when the BBC sees the impact of their choice on ratings/viewers/sales.

2) BBC stubbornly stand by their choice, may and hammond leave and are replaced with three new members who try to hard to be like clarkson may and hammond and fail miserably, because you cant force that dynamic, specials would be atrocious, ratings would plummet, program would eventually be scrapped, while clarkson hammond and may reunite for a new program on another channel.

What people don't seem to get is that clarksons role in Top Gear was much more than just being the silly old fat bloke cracking jokes, he put in the most work in organizing each show, the jokes, the puns, the planning, was virtually all clarksons roll, and in removing him even if may and hammond stayed, that portion of the show would be lost, and i think hammond and may are acutely aware of that, so their desire to continue, without clarksons input, all the while trying to shoehorn in a false dynamic with a new addition to the team would just fall short and miss the mark entirely.

tl;dr, if the BBC don't go back on their descision by mid 2016, Top Gear will be dead by 2017, and the three will most likely be hired by another channel to continue their antics, the very antics which made Top Gear what it is (or WAS) today.

C'mon, there's a third scenario that's also be the most likely to happen:

3) The BBC realizes that they can't run the show as it was until now and, after keeping the show on hiatus for a year, they launch the new Top Gear with a new set, new hosts and a different take on how they show the cars. The show will be different enough to avoid direct comparisons, although they'll keep the same test track and will still put the guest stars on an affordable car, which most likely will also be new.

Most likeley outcome, the 3 presenters go to another channel do the exact same show under a differnt name, BBC version of top gear relaunches and dies after one series, as it was never about the cars it was all about the 3 men doing stupid things.

I'm going to bet that James May and Richard Hammond hand in their notices pretty soon, and the three turn up on another channel continuing their antics, it's their dynamic that brought the show it's success, breaking that dynamic has effectively doomed the show from here on in.

Pretty much. Wouldn't be surprised if we hear rumblings about this in the next week.

I'm all for Clarkson, Hammond and May leaving BBC for another network, but how much of Top Gear is owned by BBC? The name, the image, the facilities... is there something that could prevent them from setting shop on another channel? Because Top Gear has been from BBC since the late 70's.

Indeed it has, and if Clarkson, Hammond and May go off to another channel to do something similar, it won't be the first time it has happened in the show's history. Top Gear got cancelled in 2001 - the presenters at the time moved to another channel and  continued it on under the new name Fifth Gear.

The BBC then relaunched Top Gear in the new format that we know today.

Well, the show started being about cars, but once they started doing their "buy a "specific type of" car for under XXX and meet in XXX where you'll face some tests", designed to humiliate the cars and its drivers in the process, it became clear that the chemistry between the trio was also an asset that they had to use, and the specials proved that.

So they show ended being about the super cars and the gibes between the three of them.

Yeah ive watched it along time, im just saying its poplarity is less to do with the cars and more to do with the antics the trio get up to. I know many that watch it and have absolutley no interest in cars.

Agree.

To me, they act like brothers, always messing with each other, making fun of whoever makes a fail to the point of almost being cruel and yet, whenever one of them gets in real trouble, the other two don't hesitate to help... only to make fun of him later on.

And that's something that you can not make, it just happens.
