Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Sadly, I'm Just Not Sure Nintendo Can Impress Me Anymore

I was a little bit like this with Sony.

Loved the PS1 to bits, fell out of love with the comparatively soulless and bland PS2, was briefly interested again by the PS3, only to be disenchanted once more by PS4.

I think exactly the same.

My first console was a Playstation when I was 6, I love that console with all my soul, and then I get a Ps2 at 12, It was a great console too but then.... I bought a GameCube at 14 and I discovered a new whole world, that machine changed my perception of videogames forever. Ps2 feels soullness in comparison to me.

I liked the Wii but I losed my interest on it after 3 years, Ps3 only had my attention at the end of its life, because in my eyes it was a terrible console at first, and all its popular games were too similar: grey, violent, uninspired shooters with a blockbuster feel. No please. Games like Tlou, Uncharted 2 and Ni No Kuni changed my perception, but too late.

So I become a Pc gamer for the last years until one console got my interest again, WiiU. I´m very very very happy with that console, Is almost like a Gamecube 2 for me. Ps4 feels more empty, soullness, hyper-mainstream, uninspired and dissapointing than ever. I don´t feeI any of the greatness of PS1 on it, not even close. And I can have all their games on my PC with better graphics and FREE online, and you know what? I don´t want them, because 3/4 of third parties multiplatform AAA games are pretty bad today.

Lost all interest in gaming long ago, Sony Nintendo PC. But I found that magic I missed so much, in VR again. Now I cant wait got for a new chapter of videogame history to begin begin.

No more needs to be said.

How was the gamecube a dissapointment? it got plenty of multi plats in the beginning espacially from western devolopers? And it got some good mature exclusives like resident evil the best looking game in this generation. It was the best nintendo console ever made.
Thats the way nintendo should go and stick with it, evetually their consoles would sell. Their problem is this whole changing around every new generation with new consoles, you never sure what you get with nintendo which scares a lot of people off

Gamecube:

-No online  MP (Don't make me laugh by mentioning one or two games)

-Crappy small discs with many games requiring 2.

-No game diversity.  It had platformers, paper mario, and a couple of other Nintendo staples.  Meanwhile PS2 had FFX, Socom, MGS, platformers like crash/spyro/Rachet and Clank, and unique games like Jack and Daxter and dozens more.

^This article almost hit the nail on the head for me.  My first console was an N64, and while I never thought it was better than my cousin's PS1; I didn't feel like it was worse either.

Then the PS2 came out and the contest was just over.  PS2 had more games, and they were far more diverse too.  Same goes for PS3 and PS4 (Except it continues to become more one-sided).

What a terrible article, if you can even call it that.

"The GameCube was just a colossal disappointment, especially compared with the beast that was the PlayStation 2. I knew the Wii was a gimmick and I knew the Wii U was an extension of the aforesaid gimmick and destined to fail"

If the Gamecube was a colossal disappointment to him, he likely was never a fan of Nintendo, or of gaming in general. The Gamecube was the best console Nintendo has made since the SNES, the last console they were willing to take risks with the games they made. All the radical changes to their IPs like Mario Sunshine, Zelda Windwaker, Metroid, giving out F-Zero to Sega, Luigi's Mansion, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, reviving old IPs like Wave Race and 1080 Snowboard etc. New IPs like Pikmin etc. Even the 3rd party exclusives like Billy Hatcher, Star Wars Rogue Squadron, Viewtiful Joe, Baten Kaitos were crazy and unique. The best games of many of their IPs are still from the Gamecube. Ever since Gamecube they've been risk averse.

The Gamecube had identity, wide variety of games to call it's own, the Wii and Wii U lack that excitement, they are just boring to me. Whenever I think about them the first thoughts that come up is a concentrated group of core franchises.

Sadly sony and micro are even doing worse this generation, not even their own ips are interesting, killzone wasnt interesting and the only reason was bought was for the supposedly 1080p native support which ended in 960x1080i, infamous second son was same thing and not much changed besides graphics and resolution, the only surprise was that the retail was downgraded, and the order just sucks and i am not talking about graphics

the only interesting game right now for the new consoles is final fantasy XV which is not going to be 1080p but rather 900p and sub-800p respectively, lets see if the game lives up for the hype on the marketing

Sadly, Im not sure Sony/Microsoft can impress me anymore with their games and enjoy them because they lack the proper resolution.

The concept behind the Gamecube was solid, but the hardware and support just wasn't there.

Are you SERIOUSLY taking off for no online MP for the Gamecube?  Online MP was NOT a big thing until the PS3/360 generation.

Also for the game diversity, I find it strange that you're simplifying the Gamecube titles to just platformers, paper mario, and other "staples."  I think if you researched this, you'd know how cherry picked your statement is.  PS2 did have more games, but the Gamecube DID have diversity as well.

This is a bad representation of both consoles. Relatively few GameCube games needed 2 discs. Some of the Resident Evils and Tales of Symphonia (which also works wonders against your second point).

GameCube was actually a low point for platformer saturation on Nintendo platforms. No main Kirby platformer, one Mario game, the DK game was a Donkey Konga spinoff. Conversely, there was a wide variety in first and third party games. Not so vast as the PS2, but wider than the N64.

Crash and Spyro are not PS2 games that you want to mention, given that this was the beginning of the total degredation of those brands after Sony's deal with Universal ended.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.
