I think I have to say it, I didn't expect this.

But i am glad to see Michael Pachter right.

pachter is never right.

Honestly, people are losing their minds here but I actually don't see the issue if they do this as they describe. This won't be where Nintendo's next games go. IP are more flexible than that, especially mascot based ones. I expect things like Puzzles and Dragons crossovers, Dedede's Drum Dash type things, and more things akin to Pokemon Trading Card game. This could help their other sectors. It could provide a lot of brand exposure and recognition.

the thing that bothers me the most isn't that Nintendo's doing what a good company does and expanding and trying to invest in a broader market and increase the appeal of their main focus, game development

what bothers me is that people are flying on the "DOOMED" ship and prematurely saying RIP and shit before anything has even really happened. this could be one of the best moves ever and they could end up making millions directly and indirectly off of it. If not, they just go back to doing what they're used to doing, and they've got enough of a "warchest" that they'll be totally fine even if they incur losses (which, assuming the games are decent quality, I doubt will happen).

if you're really a fan, you should be supporting them and trying to make sure they do it "right"(by not putting out garbage game f2p stuff riddled with microtransactions, for instance) rather than acting like Nintendo is dead when even in a worst-case scenario, they wouldn't be dead... -_-

I think you have the right idea here. ditto this. Smartphones can't handle/isn't a fit for most of Nintendo's games anyway. Aside from what you mentioned, I could see something like Pokemon Shuffle and other spin-off games also coming in. But they don't want to put out anything too cheap because then people won't value their full-fledged games at the price they do, and they don't want to put anything too pricey because then people are less likely to buy it etc. -- they're jumping in on the mobile market at a point that there's a ton more info/research on it and it's much more obvious what moves/way to go about things are better than others. I think theirchance for success is high and at worst, their treasure chest takes a hit and they move on to doing something they know how to do (but again, they have DeNa helping here who supposedly knows what they're doing so with Nintendo's supervision, I can't see this going horribly wrong; and if it does, I'll wait until that actually happens and then do my  job as a "Nintendo fan" and let them know.)

I just want to say that I love this news.
My 2 1/2 year old daughter has really started to dominate Fruit Ninja and Angry Birds on the phone. There was a plan to buy a 3DS for her next year, but now I don't have to. She can now enjoy Nintendo games without much investment, saving on the console, and not having to pay €40 for each game.

I love this news, I need to repeat myself.

Don't get your hopes up there. Chances are these games are going to be Nintendogs, Brain Age and the like with an occasional Pokemon game thrown in there.

er... exactly.  this troubles you why?

Because it likely will be fairly successful. Which unfortunately means over time I think Nintendo's focus will become more and more smartphone/casual centric. That's where the money is.

Plenty of people I'm sure will buy Mario Kart iOS, Animal Crossing iOS, Nintendo Land iOS, etc.

people can't buy imaginary games. you're jumping the gun too early, as usual.

This is the Nintendo I know. So glad to hear this. Can't wait for Nintendo NX! Maybe it's short for Nintendo Next?

you won't be getting any 3ds game or similar on smartphones.

As long as they continue to support dedicated gaming consoles and the development of these mobile games doesn't impact the development of console games then I don't care.  The profits they make from mobile are just gonna be used to fund AAA games.
