Can AAA Studios Create "Indie" Games?

I`d say basically a team that isn`t funded by a publisher, and is funded by the team themselves. Kickstarter I think it also acceptable, but that`s when the term indie starts to go into the grey area.

An indie game is funded by its developer. As in, the people doing the day-to-day tasks of making the game are paying out of pocket for its development.

But couldn't you say that too is a grey area? With self publishing and all now there are plenty of fairly big studios that fund games themselves, such as The Witcher.

Besides that, what of games made directly by a publisher, Assassin's Creed for example was published by Ubisoft, but it was also funded and developed by Ubisoft so could you not argue that is independent as well since they never had any outside help?

Isn`t that what the definition of a indie team is? They fund it themselves with no outside help, and they can make their game however they want without appeasing certain publishers. Also, don`t the Witcher games have publishers? The thing is that Ubisoft is a company that focuses on making games and have been for awhile now. They are an established company with assets. I wouldn`t say they are indie.

Indipendent studios, and the title got nothing to do with the result of the game.
The game might be big, or it might be small.

No man's sky.

DayZ

etc etc.

It all depends on the skillz of the team on how the game are going to end up.

most indipendent studios rarely takes on huge project that might take years due for being to few developers.

But some do, but indipendent is basically just indipendent, and indie games means it's a game created by a indipendent studio.

The Quality of a game is basically described as Low, Mid-tier and AAA when it comes to budget.

and indies are just a genre, not defined by it's quality

Cheap, casual gamer, 2 hour game, not worth my time. Those are the best words to describe them.

They are independant of a publisher

Indie, short for independent. Is Ori independent of MS' say?? No, than its not an indie game.Valiant Hearts, not indie. Shovel Knight, indie. Its that simple really. Ori and VH are both smaller downloadable games yes but they are big publishers way of competing with the quickly growing indie scene.

I personally believe that AAA studios cannot create a "indie" title. I think with them it falls more under niche or pet project. i.e. child of light, valiant hearts while they felt "Indie" they were allowed by the parent studio because the successful programmer wanted to divert their creative energy towards a different direction other than an annual franchise.

We are talking about artist here, to keep most happy, they need to be allowed to create something they are passionate about , as opposed to creating a cash cow for gainful employment.

True Indies have no affiliation to big studios. They were created by one person (axiom verge) or by several people but not pushed by a bigger company. Some of these do create such a strong product that a bigger company decides to alleviate their financial cost in the form of publishing.

I just started playing Orin and the blind Forest and it is great. The opening is reminiscent of UP (it tugs at the heart strings) I can honestly saw that I am surprised that this game was not picked up by Sony. They really let a gem slip by...

I am going to create a thread later about this game later, even if you hate Microsoft, you need to play this game. I promise you will enjoy it. It is right up there next to Guacamelee as my favorite indie. ( I do consider this an indie)

On a side note MS, Sony, and Nintendo would be foolish not to snatch these guys up and make them a studio. Really a beautiful game. This game really should be Multiplat.

If that last post was had to read, sorry. I'm drunk posting Wheeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was made by someone with no money.

Hmm, pie.
