Definition of an Indie game is rather easy, just need to put an explanatory step first:

An indie developer is a developer totally indepedent from any bigger party like a publisher

An Indie Game is a game developed by an Indie developer not related in any way to any bigger party (like being a game from an IP owned by a publisher and also not published by one)

So no, since all AAA studios are part of or subcontracted to some publisher, it's impossible atm for an AAA studio to create an Indie game

Some interesting opinions in this thread, the poll is closer than i would have thought as well.

Never noticed the poll.

Yes, of course AAA studios can make indie games. Indie doesn't mean independent anymore, it is pretty much its own genre so games like Child of Light, Ori or even Gamefreak's badass Elephant game are all still indies. They are similar to other indie games, they look like indies, they have similar budget to other indie games and they get the reception of indie games. Regardless of dev, they are indie.

I highly disagree.
Those are simply 2D games. 2D != indie. Even different 2D genres.

The definitions is clear. Indie = not published by a big publisher. Therefore Ori is not indie! Noone would Rayman Legends an indie game, right?!

Is it really that simple though? I don't think it is. Indie doesn't really mean independent game any more. It has become its own style. Those games are of the indie style and are therefore indie games.

Bet Shiken that COD would outsell Battlefield in 2018. http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=8749702

I'm sorry. I grew up with 2D games and I really can't see it like that. Ori is an 2D castlevania style game, not an indie.

Every definition of indie was already said, and I would like to add that the term should be killed. People hate the games based on genres, which is really sad. Games are games, good or bad, that's all.

3DS, Wii, PSP, Vita, PS2, PS3, PS4 & Steam.

The "genre" for these games is metrovania actually, a mixture of metroid and castlevania.

That only works for certain ones though. What about others such as Child of Light? And what of games like Minecraft? That was definitely indie when it was made. It still looks and plays the same, has it suddenly become not indie now that it is owned by Microsoft? Nope, it still looks like an indie game, plays like an indie game and is remembered as being an indie game.

Oh, and games can have more than one genre.

Not ori.

And no to the question.
