Yeah, I really don't get that. There are some indie games that look really good, maybe not AAA but definitely comparable with AA games. Yet others are either made by people who just can't do graphics at all or people who intentionally make them look as bad as possible.

You bust have incredibly low standards for what makes a AA game, because I have never seen an indie game even come close to AA quality, that being a game like Bayonetta 1/2, Vanquish, SM3DW, Unfamous, Sunset Overdrive, etc.

Also, it costs less time, resources, and money to make retro-style games. That's why they do it.

Looks alright to me... As does

I made this thread a long time ago.

In my honest opinion, an indie game is a game made by an independent developer, without any kind of help of bigger companies or publishers aside from publishing the game (I find this step acceptable).

That's the only requisite, really. Budget, team size or time poured into developing does not void an indie status, if that game is made from scratch to the end from an independent developer.

Yeah, I think this is the best definition that I could ever make

Sometimes they intentionally make them look as bad as 8bit games for some odd reason.

But that looks good? :P

There are various reasons why a lot of  indie devs choose this approach. Some of it is that it's an easy, but also nostalgic and identifyable direction. There's a lot of more complex but far worse looking 2D and 3D art styles that they could replicate.

The game you've chosen, everything is done by 1 person. I think we should be cutting him a bit of slack in the graphics department. As long as they're functional and you know what you're doing, I don't see a problem. In fact, I actually do like the visuals in that game.

I'm closely watching this game and I think the developer choose that style because it's a reimagining of Metroid. Wouldn't have posted a good picture like that if I didn't try to show it some appreciation.

Not Minecraft

Definition of an Indie game is rather easy, just need to put an explanatory step first:

An indie developer is a developer totally indepedent from any bigger party like a publisher

An Indie Game is a game developed by an Indie developer not related in any way to any bigger party (like being a game from an IP owned by a publisher and also not published by one)

So no, since all AAA studios are part of or subcontracted to some publisher, it's impossible atm for an AAA studio to create an Indie game

Some interesting opinions in this thread, the poll is closer than i would have thought as well.

Never noticed the poll.

Yes, of course AAA studios can make indie games. Indie doesn't mean independent anymore, it is pretty much its own genre so games like Child of Light, Ori or even Gamefreak's badass Elephant game are all still indies. They are similar to other indie games, they look like indies, they have similar budget to other indie games and they get the reception of indie games. Regardless of dev, they are indie.

I highly disagree.
Those are simply 2D games. 2D != indie. Even different 2D genres.

The definitions is clear. Indie = not published by a big publisher. Therefore Ori is not indie! Noone would Rayman Legends an indie game, right?!

Is it really that simple though? I don't think it is. Indie doesn't really mean independent game any more. It has become its own style. Those games are of the indie style and are therefore indie games.

I'm sorry. I grew up with 2D games and I really can't see it like that. Ori is an 2D castlevania style game, not an indie.

Every definition of indie was already said, and I would like to add that the term should be killed. People hate the games based on genres, which is really sad. Games are games, good or bad, that's all.

3DS, Wii, PSP, Vita, PS2, PS3, PS4 & Steam.

eh, they are both overrated meh games to me. Why not call them the same thing.

The "genre" for these games is metrovania actually, a mixture of metroid and castlevania.

Not ori.

And no to the question.
