Forums - Sony Discussion - The PS4 is already leading the VR arms race, here's why...

Whoever brings it to consoles first will get my money and my loyalty. If it's Sony, then so be it!

I don´t think Valve and Oculus are stupid to demand bleeding edges PC to run their VR sets.

I would not even be surprised if it could run on tablets and smartphones.

Any way, this race hasn´t even begun. General public is not insterested in VR and the companies are not pushing the market to adopt this tech, not even Sony.

They are surfers on the tide looking and waiting for the perfect wave of interest in this form of entertainment. Maybe if Apple would make the first real move.

That can change oh so quickly though. Sony's product is probably still at least a year from launch. I do think they hold certain advantages, being a games company with strong software support, the market leader in home consoles and potentially the chance to launch their product first. I have a feeling they might have learned from Move, and will dedicate more resources to VR.

Show off the tech on a few primetime tv talk shows, and roll out a massive advertising campaign. It could potentially become a big holiday seller, along the lines of kinect. All it would take it the right advertising, price point, and some compelling software. If it doesn' hit all three though, it could stay very niche and ultimately end up a dud.

It's certainly going to be interesting watching it unfold.

I don't think valve and oculus have any control over what it how their games work with their VR headsets. That kinda the double edges sword of PC gaming.

The part of the general public that is tech savvy enough to know and try VR is very interested in it. That's why Facebook could pay so much for it. The rest, well... they will know about it when it goes mainstream.

All that aside, if there is one thing the article has on point, is that with the PS4, with it being a console... VR will be more plug and okay than it on a PC will ever be. That should go without saying tho.

my only issue with it is its too bulky.

needs to be smaller like in Sword At Online lol. Granted it;s an anime but that is where this should be heading.

I dunno, the SAO one is pretty bulky as well...

nah not the gen one thing lol. This one.

The bulkiness doesn't really matter to me but it needs to be comfortable to wear for hours or longer.

The bulkiness is what will make it uncomfortable i think for extended periods of play.  I guess it would potentially be very light, I don't know.

I thought steam was releasing the headset first like way ahead of the PS4 by almost a year.

Well then they will be the first to be killed by it

Don't understand this minset of people think VR will die. Everyone I've heard from that has used it has nothing but good things to say about it. Everyone I talk about it with who doesn't even know VR is coming seems excited about it. One guy said it'll probably be what pushes him into getting a next gen console. I would really like to know what specifically about VR says "this is going to fail".

To me technologies like 3D and Wii motion were obviously going to fail because well they sucked. The ideas didn't even sound good to begin with and then when you actually used them they weren't that great either.

I don't understand it either but there's always naysayers on anything. VR is the closest to full immersion that we can get with video games and movies/shows without having tech that's similar to what it's SAO or the matrix. 3D and motion control were weak concepts/products compared to the possibilities of VR. There was never really any longevity with 'em past one console generation. VR will just keep advancing for many years well past one console gen to the point of SAO.
