Forums - Gaming Discussion - "Cheating" in video games, and how does it make you feel?

We've all been there. You're playing a game, everything is going great, and then you suddenly reach that point where you get stuck. It could be anything really, the level or boss are too hard, or too annoying, but you're getting frustrated fast. Do you tempt the dark arts and "cheat" to get past this part or do you tough it out and see it through to the end?

To make things more interesting, for this definition of "cheating" in this context I am including things like...

-Cheat Codes (like in GTA to spawn a tank and run everything over)
-ActionReplay/GameGenie or any external cheat device
-SaveStates and or other tools
-Using Bugs/Glitch exploits (like the pause trick in Mega Man)

If you have "cheated" to get past a part of a game, how has that made you feel? How do you feel about people who "cheat" in games?

My experience is this: today I am playing through Mega Man 1, and at the end of Dr. Wily Stage 1 there is the Yellow Devil boss.

His pattern is, he moves from one side of the stage to the other, piece by piece and then comes together when all the pieces are on one side, opens his eye and then shoots you. The problem is, the Yellow Devil's pieces do a lot of damage to you, there are a lot of pieces, they can be tricky to dodge, and the only way to damage him is to shoot his eye. Also the eye doesn't always appear in the same place and you usually only have one shot to hit it, if it appears in a bad spot and you miss. Well tough luck, you need to sit through an entire cycle until you get another chance to hit him. Luckily there is a way to make him much easier. If you mash the select button to pause the game while shooting a Thunder Beam, you can hit the Yellow Devil multiple times and kill him in one cycle!

Doing this I don't feel bad at all.  Mostly because of how annoying this boss is, the stage is also rather tricky, with instant death spikes and some tight jumps, and getting a Game Over means I would have to constantly replay it and Mega Man 1 is not a game I really like enough to really care too much about. Do I miss out on bragging rights? Maybe, but really I think I'd rather keep preserve my sanity.

Are cheats still in games nowadays? Most of them are so easy i don't feel the need to look for them anymore.. But i had an action replay, game shark back in the days..

When i check gamefaqs because im stuck in a videogame i feel like the worst man alive.

"-SaveStates and or other tools"

I wouldnt consider this a cheat. ^-^)/

I sometimes use walkthroughs.... for rpgs ect.
I dont mind it really... I dislike playing through a game and going "oh I missed this item" or some such, knowing im less powerfull than I could be.

I like going up to the toughest bosses in game, and just smacking them down :)
(without resorting to cheats, just good grinding)

It really depends on the game...

In general, cheating is frowned upon, but I think cheating is okay, for the most part.
Cheating to beat other people in multiplayer is a no-no. (Cheating for broken weapons) Also, cheating for completion and showing off is no good. Cheating can also sometimes take the fun out of the whole game by making things too easy and boring.

Cheating to wreck havoc for your own entertainment is acceptable, imo. Sometimes, but rarely, I cheat to progress further in a game that I normally would give up on and not complete. Cheating after finishing the game can be fun to play around with the extras.

...and then, there is the grey area! Cheating for legal Pokemon to compete in a tournament is widely debatable, and I'm not so sure about that..

I feel great actually, I don't really use cheat or codes but I do use exploits. And I also use walkthroughs when I need to. It just feels good to beat that part you really struggled to beat. It doesn't matter how you achieve it, the important thing is the result.

I'm pretty sure walkthroughs are not considered cheating though..

It's just a game. Ultimately, it's just a way for me to advance levels and do things I previously couldn't do. I don't cheat in school, at work, or with people I care about. If it doesn't put me at an unfair advantage in the real world, it isn't cheating.

Known as "feels good". It's fine for people want to focus on story, but some people can focus on story without cheating.

Cheating is okay as long as it doesn't affect other players. (multiplayer battles and such)
