I'm starting to suspect it won't.

They seem to always select low resolution screens for their portables; the DS was 256x192, (main screen only) and even the 3DS, at 400x240 (not counting 3D, main screen only) actually has a lower resolution than the PSP; if this trend continues, their next one may likewise be below that of the Vita, which boasts a sub-HD 960x540.

I know 720p screens aren't exactly an expensive rarity these days, but given the cost-cutting measures Nintendo has adopted for the last two generations, I can see them equipping their next portable with a 480p screen or thereabouts, which would also mean they'd need a less expensive and power-hungry GPU to render at that resolution, thus not only lowering production costs but extending battery life, which in a portable is crucial.

But enough of my jibberish, what do you think?

It won't. I don't even know why people expect it.
It's not like Nintendo cared much about powerful hardware the last few years.

If you're interested in Nintendo content and understand german, maybe you want to take a look at my youtube channel! :)

No, Nintendo is always behind the curb. But usually it gives us cheaper prices as well ;).

Actually, Yes.

HD is not expensive right now, so 720p for a handheld will be cheap. Maybe not full hd, but 720p is enough for a handheld.

Well, isn't the gamepad 480p? It looks fine to me, and they've never been know for their cutting edge handhelds so.

I say no but would be great if it did

Yup, the Gamepad is 854 x 480. And it looks fine to me too.

Either nHD (640*360) qHD(960*540) or HD (1280*720) (depending on whether or not it has two screens.) If it has two screens I don't expect one of the screens to be much bigger than say the 3DS XL. So nHD or qHD would be fine. If it is one large screen (say Vita's size or even Phablet sized) I expect either qHD or HD.

Basically I expect the screen to be 200+ ppi for the sole reason that a screen that has less would be hard to find a manufacturer for (even the lowest res phones are like 250 ppi.) Vita is about 220 ppi. 3DS ranges from 90 to 125 depending on the version.

Just for context, here is my phone. It is now a $100 phone (no contract.)

It's screen is qHD (540*960.) Its diagonal is 4.5 inches. It's PPI is 245. Now look at its PPI rating. That is considered low pixel count for today's standards.

Well if the Gamepad is 480p and all games I've played on it using off-tv play still looks pretty good, I wouldn't mind it being 480 to be honest then. 720p wouldn't be too bad either though =p
