Forums - Sales Discussion - The Race to 1 Million: Sunset Overdrive vs. Bayonetta 2 vs. The Order: 1886

All of these games have controversy attached to them, and many of the fans of these games want to see them reach that magic 7 figure sales number in order to be able to say that these games have succeeeded despite all the haters wishing doom on these games.

Bayonetta 2 was hugely controversial for taking a PS/XB franchise completely away from its modest but dedicated fanbase. The internet rage floating around this game lasted long and was similar in proportion to when FFXII was announced as multiplat. The game has great reviews and the fans who've played it love it. Surely it deserves 5 million in sales let alone 1 million. Unfortunately even if all the Bayonetta fans from PS3 and 360 bought the game it would barely pass 2 million.

Sunset Overdive was a punch in the guts to fans of Ratchet and Clank. It was a coup for MS to secure an exclusive from a studio that seemed to be first party in all baut name, until the abortive Fuse came along and almost killed the studio. But Insomniac wanted to spread its creative wings, and Microsoft was there happy to give Insomniac a deserved chance at making a fun new franchise that does not involve a large eared Lombax and sidekick robot. The sense of betrayal was mollified somewhat by the fact that Insomniac had attempted to go multiplat already, and that the Ratchet and Clank franchise is still getting support. This game has also been very well received critically and by fans. And discussion pretty much always leads to comments like "would have sold far better on PS4". Reaching 1 million might not shut those comments down, but it is a worthy milestone which does offer a counter point to such views.

The Order's controversy has nothing to do with exclusivity. But it courted a great deal of criticism through its development for looking nice but playing boring, on the basis of not a great deal of actual gameplay being made available for preview write ups. But whether or not you believe there is a grand conspiracy, it seems few reviewer's minds have been changed now that the full game has been played, weighed measured and for a lot of reviewers found to be wanting. This was meant to be the premier first party new IP that would launch a new era of first party Playstation content that would define the new generation. And coming off the back of a series of critical underperformers from the first party studios at Sony, it was hoped The Order could get a more universally positive critical and fan reaction. No such luck. The preception is that Sony needs some games that aren't indie / PSN titles that get metascored in the high 80's in order to justify it's market leader status. This was a position that both fans and detractors demanded that the Order occupy. To the delight of detractors and the disappointment of fans The Order didn't deliver, and it faced a tough road to become the 8th generation's Uncharted for Sony.

The sales success or failure of these three games has come to partly define the home console competition in these early years of the generation: Can Wii U attract the type of gamer that is not typically associated with Nintendo? Can Xbox one break the shackles of being seen as limited to shooters and Forza, and be a fertile ground for succesful new IP? Can Sony actually produce a new IP that is well received by fans and critics?

So the target is 1 million (physical sales according to VGC), because a AA exclusive game on an HD console is generally seen as being unsuccessful if it doesn't pass 1 million in physical sales.

This is where they all stand:

Bayonetta: Current sales are ~640K. Weekly sales estimate for the last 4 weeks has been an average of ~5.3K per week, but decreasing to a current low of 4135. Time to 1 million ~ 60 weeks

Sunset Overdrive: Current sales are ~ 760K. Weekly sales estimate for the last 4 weeks has been an average of ~5K per week. Like Bayonetta this has been on a downward trajectory to the current low of 3599. Time to 1 million ~48 weeks.

The Order 1886: Has no current sales on VG Chartz, because you know, delays in publishing numbers. The only thing we have to go on right now is unconfirmed reports that in its first 2 weeks in the UK The Order has sold over 50K with a 56% second week drop. This compares to 38K for Sunset Overdrive (VGC) with a 61% second week drop, and 15K for Bayonetta 2 (also VGC) with an 81% second week drop. Time to 1 million: TBA

Purely in terms of metacritic score are we likely to see the best game sell the worst and the worst game sell the best? I think that's quite likely.

I don't see MS doing anything to try to push Sunset Overdrive sales in holiday 2015. There are much more important games for MS to focus on to try to move Xb one sales forward. If Sunset Overdrive isn;t close to 1 million by the time the 2015 holidays are over, the VGC database may never get the game across the line.

As a very different sort of Nintendo exclusive, Bayonetta 2 may still attract marketing attention from Nintendo, because it is a selling point to some gamers who would otherwise probably never consider buying Wii U. Again Holiday 2015 is possibly the last chance for Bayonetta to hit the million, but Nintendo will need to help it along.

Merely through the fact that PS4 has a huge lead in install base and in weekly sales, The Order could hit 1 million before the holiday period even starts.

What say you?

I think it will be Order 1886 first followed by Sunset and finally, Bayonetta 2 (unless there is an awesome promo/bundle) mostly cause x1 is gaining an install base faster than the wiiU and it will probably get a discount sooner

The Order will likely sell over 1m first week.

B2 is unlikely to sell 1m at all.

the order, just like the person above me said, did over 1 million week 1.

I highly doubt it will reach those kind of numbers.

I'd say about 550-650k would be a very good start for it.

Really? Where are you getting that information from?

I don't recall Sunset Overdrive topping charts in different global markets when it released even with bundles.

Safe to say even with all the controversy that The Order: 1886 will pass a million like many other Sony published games on PS4.

1. The Order: 1886
2. Sunset Overdrive
3. Bayonetta 2
