Forums - Gaming Discussion - Activision, EA Tried To Buy Minecraft

Forbes reports that Activision Blizzard and Electronic Arts, among others, came forward, expressing interest in pursuing a deal. Discussions with Activision "petered out," the report says. Persson wouldn't talk specifics about what happened with EA, a company he has been critical of in the past. But he did say that Mojang ruled out would-be buyers "who did gameplay in a way we didn't like."

Microsoft's 2.5 billion offer, however, proved to be the most alluring. Sale terms included Mojang's three founders getting a "clean break" from the company and the promise that there would be no layoffs at Mojang. Forbes notes that with only 47 total Mojang employees, layoffs were unlikely to happen anyway.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer orchestrated the deal on Microsoft's side. Though Mojang's business boss Carl Manneh took point on sale terms, Persson and other Mojang founder Jakob Porser spent time with Spencer "over herb-flavored Swedish liquor arguing with them about the direction of the gaming industry," according to Forbes.

Interesting.

Wow, I'm so relieved EA didn't buy Minecraft. They would have exploited the game to ridiculous extremes (microtransactions per diamonds) and when it wasn't profitable, take down Mojang.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

If EA would have bought Mojang we'd get a new Minecraft installment every year, so let's be happy that Microsoft bought Mojang instead.

EA would have ruined the game some how. I am glad MS bought it.

Good thing MS got ahold of it then.

I don't play minecraft but I'm glad for all the people that do that Microsoft bought it.

MS just needs to port this to Nintendo platforms to serve everybody.

It's funny to see people actually happy that MS bought them after finding out who the alternatives were.

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.

Gamers are really scared of EA and Activision.

I predict that the Wii U will sell a total of 18 million units in its lifetime.

The NX will be a 900p machine
