Forums - Gaming Discussion - Do you think splatoon is just a shooter with colors?

A few time ago i spotted some posts of people defining Splatoon as "a shooter with bright colors and cartoonist characters that's why nintendo fans are hyping this".

So my question is... do you think Splatton differs from any other shooter just because the bullets are ink the characters are non realistic and there is no blood and violence?

ps: I'm not planning to debate with anyone who actually think this is true. I will just avoid your post in the future when Splatoon is getting close to release

Well describing it as a shooter with colours almost immediately distinguishes it from every other shooter out there that people get repeatedly excited about. So unless we consider colours inherently bad, this is a compliment, right?

It is also a shooter where the main objective is not to shoot down your opponents, but rather shooting the walls and other surfaces. This alone makes it one of the most unique shooters in years.

Also, squids.

What has me so interested in it is almost everything about it. The style, the characters, the only known goal of the game, and story between the inklings and the octopus enemies. The color definitely makes it stand out, but I liked the idea of trying to cover as much of the field as possible. The usual game I recall in shooters is just killing the most enemies, setting a bomb, breaking into a safe, and so on. So this different objective is really interesting and really has my attention. And playing as something other than a soldier or gritty character is cool... : )

That`s my 2 cents. So I guess, my answer to your Q is uh... yes! : ) And the covering as much of the field as possible objective sounds cool and new.

I pretty hyped for Splatoon actually, i think there are many twits in the shooter formula that make it very different.

Well if you want to break this down to its bare bones, then yes, Splatoon is a shooter with colours.

Splatoon is a lot more than just a "shooter with colors" unless of course, the people that says it havn't been keeping up with the trailers/news. This game has plenty of deep mechanics that out do many shooters these days on its gameplay portion. Each character can have various rolls such as shield or paint roller or AoE and each roll is important to winning the game and plays differently from each other. On top of that, if you are a squid, u can traverse the level in various different ways like via thin wire for example and how u spread the paint can really change how you and your team mates go around the level and where the enemies can go to. And the list goes on.

I think the only reason some people are downplaying this is cause it looks too "kiddie" and "cartoony" cause god forbid we have a TPS with some actual color and cuteness. It always has to be about "gritty realism" to be taken seriously these days

While it does seem like a shooter with colours is that necessarily a bad thing. The game is taking a well-known genre and is adding some new twists, like the squid abilities allowing you to fling yourself across the map, the fact that the main goal is to cover the most area in paint, and, yes, the colour, makes it feel unique. So yes, it is a game with colours and you shoot so it does fit the criteria, but is that necessarily a bad thing? Not really.

It's shooter with colors, unique art-style and design, in both visuals and sound, that spices things up by having lots of platforming challenges and by not taking itself seriously; a breath of fresh air.

I'm now filled with determination.
