Forums - Sony Discussion - Tales Of Xillia (1 & 2) are pretty underrated, Why?

I am playing Xillia 2 and love it and the original, among my favorite entries in the series. Battles are fun, story is interesting and like the characters, what I want in a JRPG.

They're niche? I honestly have no idea.

Aren't all JRPGs?

Basically this.

Haven't played Xillia 2, but Xillia 1 was great!

You do get back to Fenmount and Its good you picked Jude as main character. Milla's story gets confusing at one point because she leaves the party for a long time and a lot of things happen without you knowing.

Also... is Tales of Xillia 2 a direct sequel? Or just set in the same universe but with a new cast of characters?

Direct sequel, the original characters are in the new one as well

Every time Microsoft touches a Japanese developer they get sucked

That's pretty awesome!

Poor dev got cancer. It kinda makes me mad when someone makes fun of him (my father is also sick).

Great game with awesome quirky character.

I'm not sure about the sales but I thought the original Tales of Xillia was the most popular if the tales of series.

Well to be honest, the reason I picked Jude, and this may sound sexist or whatever, is because he's male... I tend to find it easier to play as male characters, although another factor was reading that they had slightly different playstyles and I quite liked the idea of using my fists to fight instead of a weapon (It reminded me of Yang actually from Final Fantasy IV, lol), but yeah I'll admit gender did play some part in it... although from what I remember, I did find Milla to be interesting enough to maybe warrant a second playthrough as her at some point, although obviously not until I've finished the game with Jude first, lol. Would you say it's wise to play the game through with each character? Like, is there enough to differentiate the gameplay and story, or would I be fine just finishing it with one person then moving onto the sequel?

Also... is Tales of Xillia 2 a direct sequel? Or just set in the same universe but with a new cast of characters?

Nope. Just play Jude and watch the cutscenes of Milla on youtube. You will know what part of the game that is going to be seperated by character. The different cutscenes are short for milla but are very long for Jude. The game skips a lot of things when you play as milla and her cutscenes aren't interesting.

If I remember right there is two chapters you will be skipping if you chose Milla. It is kind of strange they make you pick Milla in the first playthrough as you seem to be skipping a lot of story content.

Milla's battle themes are my favorite out of the two characters. But you can listen to them both when you reach a town called Xian Du.

As for Xillia 2, Yes It is a direct sequel but It has a different main character.  Do not look up the trailer or the opening of it because it is a big spoiler for the first game. Until you reach a major plot twist at least.

Tales of Xillia 2 isn't underrated.  The main character is a mute with no personality, he just goes with the flow and the side quests are handled awfully and are so boring and repetative, which wouldn't be that big of a deal except the game forces you to do them before you can proceed with the main story.  Couldn't force myself to finish it.

I'd still consider it underrated when a lot of western gamers think their hungry for good Japanese games but never heard of it. You might consider the game flawed but it's a throwback to many old JRPGS.

Well, I found them to be pretty mediocre. So I can completely understand why no one is talking about them. It is just my opinion though. Graces F on the other hand, had its flaws but was amazing in its combat system, and the chemistry between the characters was amazing.

I think your overestimating how many western gamers are "hungry" for Japanese games, or your confusing Japanese games with JRPGs.  Nontheless that logic makes not sense, that's like me saying gamers are hungry for open world games that means Assassin's Creed 3 is underrated!
