Forums - General Discussion - How can I learn how to draw?

Tagged games:

Greetings, Artists of VGC!

I need your help, like, real bad.

So, for as long as I can remember, I wanted to be an artist. Yet, I could never quite grasp drawing all that well. This is what my usual drawings look like:

Or like this when I'm feeling "inspired"

They say every artist has a beginning, but it seems like that beginning has lasted for more than 20 years in my case!

How can I get better? I was always told to just draw everything around me whenever I can but that hasn't really helped me :(

I'm not the best artist by any means but I learned through a lot of trial and error. Also I had this "How to draw Manga" book from when I was a kid that taught me a lot. I'm sure there's plenty of resources on the internet for you to use, just remember to keep trying and practicing till you eventually improve. Sorry if this wasn't that helpful.

I'm not really much of an artist myself but there's plenty of tutorials online! The link below I thought had some pretty neat ones.

As for getting better, my background was in piano and really the more you practice, not only do you become better at playing the piano and memorizing songs. But you start to learn other skills like you be able to start playing a song by ear. So I would think you should keep on doing tutorials and keep on practicing and eventually you'll pick up enough skills and experience to start drawing your own stuff!

The thing is, that site's about replicating what's already on there. Based on the countless of drawings I drew off that site, it doesn't really help me all that much .-.

There's two ways with how I've managed to improve my drawing techniques, though they're rough still:

* Try copying an already existing piece using only your eyes for reference, not superpositioning the papers.

* Try writing what you're seeing, right now. It doesn't matter if it is a desk, people walking, or someone staring at you. Just try.

Pssst... Don't sell your ability short. http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=6056466

Yeah... that wasn't original. http://www.easydrawingtutorials.com/index.php/91-nintendo/132-draw-link?start=4

That's my problem really, I have no problem replicating stuff off sites, but I just can't draw anything worth shiz on my own...

Truthfully the best way is to draw pictures with references. Not direct copies. Or draw things you see.
Doing so will allow you to see all the attributes of the subject. Angles, curves, folds, etc. You will begin to notice the finer details that make those pictures good and then incorporate them into your own drawing.

But honestly, I just draw off the top of my head and as such they always look... odd. I try to draw what is in my mind but it never works out right.

It is also good to always do the fundamentals:
-Do a small sketch of what you want to draw.
-Make an outline featuring circles for body parts, and sticks for limbs.
-I usually do the eyes and facial details next to try and give it life.
-...I and still pretty meh at clothing.

All in all, practice makes perfect and slowly but surely you will pick up little things. Like the head rule of thumb: 7 heads tall is an adult, 5-6 heads tall is a teen, and 4 heads is a kid.

Hate to break it to you, but you can't "learn" how to draw. Let me rephrase that, while you can learn how to draw, you can't learn how to be an artist.

Its like having a great voice doesn't mean you will also be a great song writer.

Its an art, and the thing about art, is that you don't really teach it. You either have it or you don't. You can hone and improve your art, fine tune it and polish it with practice if you already have it but if you don't... well you can only ever get as good as being a mimic. And as far as drawings go, if mimicking is all you're gonna do, well they have printers for that. In music, this is like the people that make "covers" of other peoples work.

as an example, look up John Butler-ocean on YouTube. listen to it, then take in that he created that musical price, then look up John Butler ocean cover.... you'll see some great stuff from others that are really good, but most of then are mimics.
