Forums - Sony Discussion - If you designed the PS4, what would you have done?

I wouldn't go with an external PSU, or really make any changes to the existing hardware beyond minor tweaks to the controller. They basically hit hit a home run this gen in that regard.

As far as the software goes, there's teething problems entering any new generation, rushing software to meet earlier deadlines would have resulted in even less complete products, a problem that is now synonymous with this gen thus far.

The Order:1886 had 3 years in development and a sizable workforce. I'm not entirely sure why, but the same problem has existed since last gen; a high proportion of early exclusives from third parties are usually half finished or have major design flaws. See Ryse, Titanfall, The Order, Lair or Heavenly Sword. Every single one of them would not really be considered a full package. Perhaps Sony should have intervened and pushed RAD to alter their focus, but they're known for having a rather hands off approach. When asked why Lair had a ridiculous control input scheme, Phil Harrison said in 2007 "Ask our friends at Factor 5".

Sunset Overdrive or Titanfall would have been additional spending that as we've seen, wasn't needed. Delaying Titanfall to the holidays though, with an additonal 8 months of development might have been a good move. It's an interesting prospect.

Keeping TLOU and GT6 for the PS4 would have meant less money for Sony overall, but a stronger push for PS4 hardware- they chose the money and in doing so also generated a large amount of good faith in gamers (the support so late into the PS3 lifecycle). I think they made the right choice with TLOU, you could make a strong case for GT6 though.

Yeah I think free basic matchmaking should have continued with the PS4, but with nerfed features. Mainly cause Plus is a huge source of revenue and Sony needs $$$.

What would be your solution for BC?

All I would have done is Backwards Compatibility via Emulation and free online. If this would be true I would have bought a PS4 by now.

True. The Order: 1886 should've been ready last year. Perhaps it may be due to the inexperience of the developers working on a new IP. I'd try and throw a little money and a few more developers to get it out before Christmas though.

OR

Perhaps DELAY The Order: 1886 (not even announce it til E3 2014?) for Holiday 2015? Then it could have a more full featured story that lasts 13-15 hours, has a few extra game modes (similar to The Mercenaries on RE4 or the VR Missions from Metal Gear Solid), and an online mode.

Saddens me to see the negative reaction to The Order because I like Ready at Dawn studios. I think they'd be great for God of War 4.

Titanfall I would try to go for for sure, Sunset Overdrive not so much, it wouldn't have been too much money since it was a smaller project. Titanfall had the potential to be a Gears of War status hit, but EA blew it. Microsoft regrets not publishing it. If MS would have published it it would've likely had a single player campaign plus a few more modes. Would've been the first person shooter killer app Sony was looking for.

If Titanfall was given a full 6 hour + campaign mode, a few extra game modes and multiplayer modes, a tentpole release date, as well as the marketing from being a PS4 exclusive I bet it could've sold just on the PS4 what it has sold on the One/360/PC.

The Last of Us I mainly did that for tradition, and to give the PS4 a hot start. I am kinda disappointed ND's first PS4 game is Uncharted 4, I was used to them starting off with new franchies each generation and TLOU would have been perfect for that.

Perhaps delay Beyond: Two Souls for the PS4 instead.

Yeah but your 1 lost sale right now is better for Sony as Im sure it led to much more sales and money so far.
Think about it, BC bumps up the price to be even higher then the Kinect SKU XBO. So the XBO doesnt look as bad at the start and probably takes sales away from Sony.
Then having free online leads to a massive loss in revenue, MS proved a subscription service for online = $$$

Plus HDN V-II is on its way soon, we will see you then =P

If it'd be done through Emulation it wouldn't cost that much more. They could have made an extra model with BC which would cost a bit more. And yeah, it's obvious why they picked the paid subscription service, but still. :C

And yeah, you're sadly right about that =p

The cell costs what... 20 bucks now? I don't think they'd have to raise the price at all.

I would have concentrated less on resolution and more on games.

i would have gotten rid of the controller touchpad and that's about it
