Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Iwata still believes that one piece of software could turn around their fortunes

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata still firmly believes they can turn around the fortunes of the Wii U with a single piece of software. Iwatapoints towards Pokemon on the Game Boy as a prime example of this and says that while they’re struggling with the console at the moment something like this could well happen again.

"On another front, we have witnessed one single software title completely change the entire picture of our business many times. I believe one of the most impressive stories was the time when people thought the Game Boy platform was virtually over. However, a software title called “Pokémon” turned things around for the platform and ended up creating the biggest annual sales for Game Boy in the latter half of the platform’s eventual lifecycle. Therefore, we do not believe that the situation so far means that there will not be a bright future. However, we should learn from our experiences of not being able to perfectly respond to certain social changes such as changes in the way consumers collect and receive information."

Nintendo board meeting:
We know the wiiU isn't doing well everyone, but it's cool, we just need to make a game like pokemon. Any suggestions?

Yeah, what could that be? -.-
Seriously, If Smash and MK failed to due it (in a large scale), then what's left? Zelda? ¬_¬

That's... actually very clever

Pokemon for the Wii U confirmed?

Around the Network

Three titles: Pokemon Ultra, Youkai Watch U and Amiibo Universe. That's all they need to keep the U alive for one more year.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Come join The 2018 Obscure Game Monthly Review Thread.

Actually think they can bring a Youkai game on the Wii U but won't have a big impact on the West unless of course Youkai 3DS explodes here (unlikely).

Pokemon rpg for the wii u would sell like 10m consoles. bold statement I know but the fanbase is huge and that game is on the list of "impossible games", right there with Half Life 3 and Shenmue 3.

I love Zelda, but zelda is a system seller for some people. Zelda Wii U could be a huge system seller if the game has a huge cultural and revolutionary impact like Ocarina of time.

or, maybe they have some new "revolutionary" casual software like wii sports and wii fit.

Well...yeah. Issue is if that was easy everyone would have that one piece of software.

The major hurdle now is making not just something incredibly compelling, but compelling enough to pull people away from free games on their phones and spend $200-$300 for a system and that game.

Why do you think Youkai Watch would be unsuccessful in the West? They haven't yet brought over a single game of the series. For all we know, it could be even more successful than in Japan.
