Forums - Gaming Discussion - New Guitar Hero will be announced at E3

Saw this at VG24/7 which they got from Kotaku.

You can read the article from Kotaku below.

Kotaku has learned from two separate sources that Activision has a new Guitar Hero game in development, reportedly for this year.

The new title, which one source says will be announced at E3 this year, takes a "more realistic" approach than previous Guitar Hero games, all of which have had a cartoonish visual style. Crowds and performers will look more in-line with real life. We were told that there are new guitar peripherals in development for the title, and both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One were mentioned. It is reportedly due for an E3 announcement and a full release before the end of the year.

The last Guitar Hero game - Warriors of Rock - was released in in September 2010, by which time the global recession had already totally deflated the music-game boom of the mid to late '00s. Activision officially killed the series in late 2011, having bought it (along with its original publisher, RedOctane) in 2007, though Kotaku reported that an ambitious and troubled seventh game was in development at New York studio Vicarious Visions.

Both Neversoft and RedOctane, the two studios that had worked on Guitar Hero after it was acquired by Activision, have since been closed. Although neither source told us exactly which developer is looking after the new Guitar Hero, it was indicated that it's one of Activision's West Coast studios, which would rule out Vicarious Visions.

This comes shortly after various signs that another beloved music game franchise, Harmonix's Rock Band, may be due a revival.

Contacted for comment, an Activision spokesperson said that it did not comment on rumour or speculation, but had a little more to add: "We don't comment on rumour or speculation, but have previously said, that as one of the most beloved entertainment franchises, we would only bring Guitar Hero back if we developed the right innovations to usher the franchise into the new generation of gaming."

So both are coming back. I knew they would eventually, they oversaturated, but that doesn't mean that basic demand for the genre had died out. Perhaps it'll just be a once-a-gen thing from now on.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

They have an uphill climb to bring this back. Many people dumped lots of money on instruments and DLC tracks last gen, so have to bring something really fresh to get them to restart. Be curious what their sales goals are for the series now. Can it survive on core 100K people with all the DLC tracks?

I'm keen. I haven't played a Guitar Hero since GH3.

Really loved it when this was a thing last gen, and it totally can be again. Dat comfortable feel seeing the Guitar Hero/Rockband games, equipment, and accessories in every retail store. There was some magic to it.

Rockband on PS4/XB1 will kick ass.

Actually kind of excited about them. Was a good game BUT I pray they dont milk it again so much like they did before.

Release a new one every 2-3 years, or just make 1 new one and the rest of the songs added digitally over time.

Guitar Hero 2 was very addictive for me and my friend at the time, then the last one I played was Legends of Rock, never tried the latest ones, is rockband as fun, better or the same as Guitar Hero?

Realiatic? Really? Why can't it keep the cartoony style it had before? Oh wait, it's because the hardcores wouldn't care about it.

I can beat more games on his 3DS than he can on my PSVita in a month. Loser has to buy the winner a game on his/her handheld Guess who won? http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=193531

Me!

Oh god yes please tell me its really happening. The GH games are some of my alltime faves, I own almost all of them... including the shitty Band Hero spinoff -_-

Edit: Also its always weird to here about Rock Bands popularity, here in Australia it was GH land thanks to this -_-

Australians haven't had much luck with Rock Band so far, with the popular four-person rhythm game still not on store shelves despite being out for almost a year in the US and almost six months in Europe. The game has been finally dated for local release on November 7, which is cold comfort considering its sequel--Rock Band 2--has already been released stateside.
