Forums - Sales Discussion - is it safe to say that VGC tracking is now totally irrelevant?

Maybe they are late because ioi is just fed up of all the whining about over/under tracked every single time numbers are released.

Yeah, makes sense.  Make your website's sole purpose irrelevant, because you can't handle complaints on a message board.  That's an entirely legit thing to do heh.

I think we have some points where VGC isn't useful anymore:
- Software sales: it is irrelevant for platforms that rely heavily on digital distribution (Vita) and for digital-only games. For PS4 and X1, digital is around 10 to 20% and with the bigger error margin VGC has for software and the fact that we won't get a lot of reports from publishers separating both numbers we have a massive error here.

And where it is relevant:
- Hardware tracking: it provides a quick view that sums up the results of Media Create and NPD with the eventual reports from Sony/MS/Nintendo and adds educated guesses for EU. It's better than keeping up with the numbers by yourself.

If this were the case, then what did he expect making a sales tracking site? its only natural that his numbers would be compared to those from other sources.

3 weeks late? I don't think that qualifies as being late anymore. Think of it, if you are trying to make numbers on a weekly basis, doesn't that mean that by the end of that week and a few days into the next you would have compiled all your data for the week ready for release? Unless we are to believe that there is data for a week that takes him two to three weeks to compile.

Call me crazy but this is how I think it would work.

  • week ending (x) all data for the week is gathered
  • 2-3 days to input data into used formula(s) and spit out results.
  • middle to end of the following week after week ending (x) numbers are released.

The only logical reason I can see for numbers being 3 weeks late is negligence. I'm open to correction though.

Software tracking certainly is, the world is going digital, in the case of PC went digital 10 years ago.

Look at PS Vita sales for instance, they are tracking this thing completely wrong and don't know how they should. They are just waiting until NPD releases and then they give us their numbers. This is a lot better than giving us wrong numbers (which they are doing).

For Hadware: Totally Relevant
For Software: Almost Irrelevant due to digital getting bigger and bigger. Example: how many copies did Destiny sell? VGchartz shows 10 Million but I believe we have around 2-3 million plus as digital....

I rather have the numbers late than wrong

what would you say if i told you could have it all,.. late and wrong!!

I totally had Queen's I want It all in my head while reading this comment

I like new numbers frequently. I don't care if they are wrong, undertracked or over tracked. It's fun see 1 week the ps4 sells 300k and the x1 sells 200k, and then suddenly the next week the x1 does the same. Then everyone starts saying x1 is desperate, Sony need to step up etc. I find that fun. But that's just me.

But a significant amount of people bitch about it every fucking time with often times no basis. Lots of the time, it's just "a feeling". You're on a sales website to discuss the sales of each console/game. Not the inaccuracy of the numbers on the site.

I bet the Wii U would sell more than 15M LTD by the end of 2015. He bet it would sell less. I lost.

I come here to see the numbers and to read the articles posted. Occasionally I'll open a thread like this one to read through. However, since the numbers have been almost absent since the turn of the year, I've been trying to find a more suitable place for me to visit and get news from. I still like this site, but without the numbers, there are better places for articles out there.
