Forums - Gaming Discussion - Something's missing this generation...what is it?

you just getting old man.

there is only so many generations you can play the same franchise without you being really amazed.

happened to me last gen. was liek yer the game is nice and pretty and all but it's still the same game essentially. COD kind of reinvented itself with the modern warfare theme. Everyone else played it safe and gave us sequels.

There was a few good new IPs such a uncharted and the last of us and even wii sports. but in general franchised games was the norm as is every gen.

There is only so many need for speeds, fifas, maddens, nbas, marios, zeldas, gran turismos that you can play before you go nice game but WISH it was better.

games failing to evolve seems like graphics are progressing but gameplay aspects arent, also focus on scify and future or unattractive settings is not what the consumer wants. take dying light for ex. game would of been much better taking place in a modern city not some 3rd world island and whats the deal with the cardboard characters and poor story or the last 2 CODs i bet just re releasing mw2 or black ops would of sold much better

oh and where are the new ips? and lets stop with the remasters already

No troll is too much for me to handle. I rehabilitate trolls, I train people. I am the Troll Whisperer.

Truly new and creative games. Nintendo isn't exempt either. I want new IP that don't heavily dwell on their tried and true formulas.

I have been an adult since I bought the first NES for my kids, so I can say that nostalgia does not apply to me as much as for others that started playing as kids.
The transformation from NES => SNES/SEGA GENESIS was great! Everything looked better and you could do so much more than before.
The transformation from SNES/SEGA GENESIS => N64/PS1/Saturn was great! The graphics, the scale, the details, 3D!
The transformation from N64/PS1/Saturn => GC/PS2/DC/XB was great! Could it be better and grander than GTA3!
The transformation from GC/PS2/DC/XB => Wii/PS3/X360 was good. Wii made you believe that gaming could be for everyone. The graphics, scale and details of most games were on the level of GTA3 and better.
Somewhere here it became boring, With the rise of the competitive scene games went from fun to chore. If you were single-minded enough you could get rich on gaming. Along comes Minecraft (and the whole indie scene) showing us that graphics does not equal greatness. The rise of retro gaming shows us also that gameplay is more important than graphics.
The transformation from Wii/PS3/X360 => Wii U/PS4/XB1 is a long overdue technical upgrade of the hardware. Not much more.
What this transformation lacks is the WOW-factor that could/should have been provided by VR - AR - HoloLens - IllumiRoom or something else that would expand the gaming experience. What we get (i.e. buy) now is GTA3-kind-of-games with slightly better graphics.
The grand scale space games (No man's sky, Star Citizen, Elite: Dangerous) may be what will make gaming vital again, but are PS4/X1 even able to handle such games or do we have to wait to the next generation?
As you might have noticed GTA3 was THE game in my lifetime.

Criterion, lower than ever.

The first few years of this gen will be a transitional period and it will take this year until we start seeing next gen games.

The good thing is I don't think companies will go through this pain again as I really believe that the next gen consoles will just be an evolution of the current consoles with better graphics and processor and companies won't need to redesign their games to work on the new platform.

As for HD remasters, I know some people are sick of them, but its been a great way for companies to move over to the new consoles and make less problems for themselves. This will mean when they release the next gen games they will be lots better than had they just rebuilt the engine from scratch (Unity is a case in point where it shows making a new engine is hard).

Making an indie game : Dead of Day!

Last gen hasn't died yet, and this one didn't have a big revolution like all the others have.

The PS360 were not some huge rev. The Wii started one, that died about 2/3 through last gen. But as for the PS360 they mostly added graphics. Yes online took off last  gen, but I am not sure it had much to do with the consoles themselves. (Xbox Live was big on the original XBOX)

Online taking off is a huge change. That's last generation's legacy in my opinion.

The real thing missing this generation is civility among gamers. Way too much ultra-fanboyism from the {pick a console} crowd.

Wasn't this the whole point of making the architecture x86 and using off the shelf parts?

I don't buy this. They are making remasters to turn a quick buck during the game release lull. Nothing really wrong with it, just calling a spade a spade.
