People don't like change.

And it wasn't just Double Dash that was changing, pretty much every Nintendo game was daring to be different, so everyone hated on everything they made. Wind Waker, Super Mario Sunshine, Double Dash... hell even Metroid Prime got hate at the time. At least they were right on one occasion (Star Fox Adventures), I guess...

That sounds about right. And now I hear on the internet how Windwaker is one of the best Zelda games.
