I can understand why they do it, but it always strikes me as silly. As soon as you change the preferred word, the new word will become just as abused and mocked because the people themselves are the objects of scorn.

There is actually a word that describes this very cycle. Anyone Know it off the top of your heads?

Euphemism-treadmill.  but its not totaly correct, we talk about the natural reaction of sane people if they are confronted with PC-Newspeak... they want to clean how we speak, but they are to stupid too understand 1984.  poor Genderstudies majors...

It's weird that many of us are not allowed to even use a certain word even in a correct context or in a positive way because of the nature of the word or it's history/abuse. I don't think any words should be banned and all should be free to say. It is the manner when someone says it that defines the intent on it's use.

Take Cumberbatch recently, he said 'coloured' in reference to actors who are not white. All I say is so? Did no one listen to what he was actually saying? The people who condemn are idiots and retarded.

EDIT: The fag thing is odd, in the UK someone says fag you think of a cigarrette first, not anything else. But a good example is the fact more commonly the word gay is being used in replacement for lots of situations for the word 'bad'. There are 600 or more variations on the word bad yet people choose 'gay'. A good example would have been when it will be banned.

Hmm, pie.

No, you cant have an autocratic police state without euphemisms!  you need words like "untermensch" to dehuminise your enemys.

Mrs S. son has fallen in a foreign conflict, fallen like a little angel, soft and fluffy.  much  better than  Mrs S. was murdered in war...

That one is especially silly because "colored people" is very bad but "people of color" is not only fine but the preferred term of many professional offense takers.

And no, they weren't listening to what he was saying. Intent means nothing. It's all about uttering magic words for some people.

Actually a faggot is an archaic unit of measure for a bunch of sticks. Perhaps from back when bunches of stick were worth something.

When a word has both a legitimatre non-offensive use and an offensive demeaning use then it is not unreasonable to ban a word when used in a demeaning context, but that does not completely prevent the use in a legitimal non-offensive context.

I wasn't wrong though. Faggots are food...

Hmm where is this from?

http://mrbrains.co.uk/

Yup, I've seen 'em on supermarket shelves...

The first sentence, is that true? If so, wow, how weird. I always found it ironic about the NAACP exists, if they want to make one version of the same term 'bad', then at least remove it from the name of an organisation that represents the people it's meant to be insulting against.

It's much to the reason I generally use the term 'ethnicity', I'd like people to find fault in that (they will try probably).

Hmm, pie.

I have never liked the word retard/retarded. If its used offensively or not, I just dont like the word.

Also the word fag in the US probably should not be used because it means something completely different than what it does in the uk. I have never head the term fag being used to call someone Gay unless it has been on an American show. Faggots as in food is really nice to eat. I only eat the beef/lamb variety as I don't eat pork.

Nobody's perfect. I aint nobody!!!

Killzone 2. its not a fps. it a FIRST PERSON WAR SIMULATOR!!!! ..The true PLAYSTATION 3 launch date and market dominations is SEP 1st

The NAACP and the United Negro College Fund are both sort of grandfathered in because they're very old and respected. They have a lot of history so I can understand them not changing it, but it does go to show some of the double standards around the whole intentions vs. forbidden words issue.

You've obviously never worked at Lionhead Studios.
