studio-based producers Hollywood Gang has hired 300 and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra screenwriter Michael Gordon to pen the script.

The producers are looking to bring on board Mama filmmaker Andrés Muschietti, who’s attached to the video game adaptation Shadow of the Colossus.

The classic ’80s syndicated cartoon, which was actually created by re-editing three different Japanese anime series, focused on an Earth defending itself from gigantic aliens with equally large robots built from a downed enemy spaceships.

A film version of the series that introduced a generation of kids to anime has been in the works at Warner Bros.  for years, but never fully taken off. In 2013, commercial-turned-feature director Nic Mathieu was attached to helm, but clearly that fell apart.

This one is interesting. Leonardo DiCaprio turned down a role in Star Wars VII in favor a role in Robotech.

Deadline Hollywood is reporting that, after going through a string of filmmakers that has include Tobey Maguire to Akiva Goldsman, Joby Harold, Gough & Millar, and Lawrence Kasdan, a Hollywood, live-action adaptation of 80's mech series Robotech is back in development, this time from Warner Bros-based producers Hollywood Gang, with Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton producing and 300 and G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra's Michael Gordon attached to write.

Reportedly, the project is looking for a director and Andy Muschietti, already attached to Shadow of the Colossus' adaptation, is being eyed.

In 2013, the adaptation of Harmony Gold's localization of Tatsunoko-produced mecha anime The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA moved into development in the wake of Transformers' success.

That year, commercial director Nic Mathieu was tapped to help the project and Latino Review reported that Leonardo DiCaprio turned down a role in Star Wars VII in favor a role in that incarnation Robotech.

Doesn't strike me as a project DiCaprio would be on board with. The director is a low level director and so is the screenwriter (the writer of GI Joe, lol).

cool!
