Forums - Sales Discussion - Wii Finally Catch and Beat PS4 as of The Fastest Selling Console in the History

In my opinion...

PS4 13 > Wii 06
Wii 07 > PS4 14
Wii 08 >> PS4 15
Wii 09 > PS4 16
PS4 17 > Wii 10
PS4 18+ >>> Wii 11+

I expect people get what I'm saying here...

I don't like this chart. It puts things into a wrong context. The Wii was heavily supply constrained for almost 3 years. People literally lined up in front of stores to get a console. The PS4 is not supply constrained anymore and hasn't been so for half a year. As for the PS2 graph: The PS2 was only out in Japan for the first few months. You can see the graph spiking around the time it was released worldwide.

And yeah, I didn't say that to miscredit your post in any way. The numbers are there and they don't lie, the PS4 is selling really well. But the circumstances for both the Wii and the PS2 were different. Also, the PS2 wasn't the break-out success people make it out to be. The PSX sold faster at peak popularity. The PS2 just kept on selling and selling and selling. A bit like the original Gameboy.

Just wanted to get this stuff off my chest

Anedoctal evidences vs hard data.

The graph shows what facts... supply constrained is something not factual... you can't know how much consoles have on shelves even when some places are having supply issues.

For example... in May PS4 was supply coinstrained in Germany for example.

PS2 tracked below Wii for two years or more... after that PS2 started to do record breaking yearly numbers.

Oh, come on. This is not true and you know it. The Wii being supply constrained is not "anecdotal evidence" - that thing was selling for way more than retail price for years. You can even looks at VGchartz' very own weekly sales graphs and see the heavy fluctuations in weekly sales the Wii had. Sorry but this is just cheap and you know it. You've been here for years, haven't you been posting during the Wii days? The Wii being completely sold out was like the most popular topic on these very forums for years. It was sold out everywhere except Japan. You can't deny that.

The graph does indeed show the factual numbers but the PS2 was only out in Japan for the first months. The circumstances were different, that's all I'm saying.

Yeah, PS4 was supply constrained in early 2014. I know that, it's not anecdotal evidence (See? I'm being consistent here). And yeah, PS2 did amazing numbers in its later life cycle. But its peak year was lower than the Wii's and I doubt the PS4's 2015 will match the Wii's 2008 (you are free to disagree here). The Wii had a higher peak but dropped off faster. The PS2 had a lower peak but continued to sell steadily in great numbers for years. The PS2 is the best selling console in history and I'm confident the PS4 will sell 100m lifetime. I didn't want to get into a battle here I'll back off now, have a nice day

I expect the same trends. Wii early on was staggering, and just as staggering was the steep decline later in its life.  PlayStation systems never die off like that and fully expect PS4 to match or exceed Wii's lifetime totals.

i expect the same result, if the PS3 after coming out a year later than the 360 with a 500 dollar price tag and a fanboy campaing of no games plus all the other bullshit that happened during its lifetime like the Hack to PSN, and it was still able to sell 85 million and will end up somewhere close to 90 lifetime, then i see no reason why the PS4 cant get passed 100 million, unless the market just shrinks to much.

easily?

in a few years?

it would take at least 4 years and it wont be easy.

It doesn't seems to be difficult. The Wii suffered with lack of power, 3rd party support and the loss of the casual crowd. All issues that the PS4 won't face. If it keeps normal PS legs, it will do it around the end of the gen or a little bit after without trouble. Right now, 120M looks a reasonable number.

It's more reasonable to apply PS2/1 sales pattern on the PS4 than use the Wii's one.

So how much Wii was supply coinstrained? How much on shelves it had? See... no factual evidence.

Supply issues can mean anything from 0 to 500k or more in a WW state... I already see consoles supply coinstrained in one region even with close to 1 million on shelves in the others.

By the end of this gen the top 3 selling consoles will be PlayStation. Only thing I'm not sure of is if the PS4 will pass the original PS or not.

Well the gap will grow quickly in this year's first quarter and then just keep growing. I will remain skeptical as to whether the 8th Gen consoles will have as great sales as everyone thinks.

You've been here since 2007 and you honestly don't know about the Wii's legendary supply issues?

The Wii's supply didn't even meet demand til early 2009! http://www.cnet.com/news/nintendo-wii-supply-finally-catches-up-to-demand/

As much as the PS4 is a hit, the Wii was a phenomenon that cannot be repeated.

That is just what I'm talking... show me the numbers... there is no factual data to know how much Wii had in shelves at these times... pretty useless.
