Forums - Sales Discussion - Wii Finally Catch and Beat PS4 as of The Fastest Selling Console in the History

PS4: 19.9m

Wii: 20.14m

From the small difference you can argue that just happened at mid/end December... so for over a year PS4 was the fastest selling console in the history.

Next quarter will be interesting.

PS. PS2 is way behind yet... it becomes fucking amazing selling after the second year... the others consoles are dead horses.

Ps4 will beat the Wii easily in a few years

PS4 lost the fastest selling record in July

The Wii was very, very supply constrained in its first year. The PS4 is selling really well but I doubt it will beat the Wii's 2008 when the console was regularly seeing 350k+ weeks whenever there was enough supply.

easily?

in a few years?

it would take at least 4 years and it wont be easy.

4,5,6,7 is what I consider a few years. The beast known as the ps4 will do it easily.  Only the ps2 will sell more lifetime.

Accounting for all circunstamces surrounding Wii, the console itself was a beast of its own with unprecedented results and I don't believe in that regard it will ever be beaten.

Having said that Wii was my least favourite Nintendo console so far. :D

I don't like this chart. It puts things into a wrong context. The Wii was heavily supply constrained for almost 3 years. People literally lined up in front of stores to get a console. The PS4 is not supply constrained anymore and hasn't been so for half a year. As for the PS2 graph: The PS2 was only out in Japan for the first few months. You can see the graph spiking around the time it was released worldwide.

And yeah, I didn't say that to miscredit your post in any way. The numbers are there and they don't lie, the PS4 is selling really well. But the circumstances for both the Wii and the PS2 were different. Also, the PS2 wasn't the break-out success people make it out to be. The PSX sold faster at peak popularity. The PS2 just kept on selling and selling and selling. A bit like the original Gameboy.

Just wanted to get this stuff off my chest

Anedoctal evidences vs hard data.

The graph shows what facts... supply constrained is something not factual... you can't know how much consoles have on shelves even when some places are having supply issues.

For example... in May PS4 was supply coinstrained in Germany for example.

PS2 tracked below Wii for two years or more... after that PS2 started to do record breaking yearly numbers.
