As a gamer, should I care about gamergate?

Yes 34 24.11%

No 83 58.87%

Kinda 24 17.02%

Total:141

Honestly, I wasn't paying any attention to the Gamergate blowout. I mean, I've seen people "argumenting" about it on gaming websites and Youtube, but I never got to grasp the true purpose until now, thanks to Angry Joe's video and badgenome here. And people here are right; its best to not to get on it. I feel like it's been going in circles for a while now.

If you like reading then you can go to wikipedia. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamergate_controversy

You should definitely not care about it. At all. It's basically three groups of people: two groups of people hating each other (Gamergate core folks and radical feminists), and the main part of the Gamergate people, who are getting ignored and blamed because of the Gamergate core people acting stupidly. So basically it's about the small Gamergate core and radical feministit, who both act stupidly.

It's a flame war, really. Stay out of it.

So, from my 10 minutes of research just now, I've come back with:

1. Zoe Quinn is allegedly a whore.
2. Zoe Quinn's ex-boyfriend transformed into a woman scorned.
3. Anita Sarkeesian is a lying opportunist.
4. White males on the internet whine a lot, and love rape and murder.
5. Law enforcement is mostly powerless.
6. The feminist movement is misguided.
7. The anti-feminist movement is slightly more misguided than the feminist movement
8. Kotaku sucks
9. Gawker sucks
10. Advertisers are never down for the squad.
11. Most of the world doesn't know this has been going on or really cares that it's been going on.

*disclaimer: These are not necessarily my opinions. Just what I gathered from articles and Youtube vids.*

I am the Playstation Avenger.

GG is about driving traffic away from websites that have been perceived to be compromised by money, and undercutting the influence of non-gamers attempting to push a political agenda in our hobby. (AKA, paid-for reviews and the"gamers are basement-dwelling women-hating shitlords; game developers need to be pushing social justice" narrative.)

It's about media corruption in the industry. In addition to how the media allinged with extrem feminist are using a victim complex to shame male gamers and paint female gamers as victims of the so called white male gaming culture.
And people are falling for it.

You should watch Main Event TV on Youtube to get the idea.

It's long and complicated because of a lot of pointless internet drama, but the basics go something like this:

A woman named Zoe Quinn develops a game called Depression Quest and got a lot of buzz on various game sites such as Kotaku. Her ex-boyfriend then writes a Tumblr claiming that she cheated on him with five guys from the industry (one of whom worked for Kotaku) and tried to gaslight him about it, which would kind of contradict her claims that she cared deeply about mental illness since he has a history of issues.

This leads to a lot of people calling Quinn a whore and making unsubstantiated claims that she slept around expressly for the purpose of getting coverage for her game. This in turn, along with the negative reception to Anita Sarkeesian's Tropes vs. Women, causes several game bloggers to write posts about how gaming isn't just for straight white males anymore and to make the hyperbolic claim that, "Gamers are dead." At this point the whole thing erupts, with one side forming up to protest misogyny in gaming while the other side protests nepotism and corruption in game "journalism", meaning that both sides just talk past and harass each other and never shut the fuck up about it.

No, it's best not to care.

Nice summary, the bold is what I've noticed the most and why you shouldn't care. Healthy debates don't require completely polarised sides of people which is what gamergate has turned into. Its essentially politics at this point, people have their agenda's and strong bias, they've already positioned themselves before the topic of conversation has been disclosed. Not to say nothing good has come from it, just that things will be healthier if people had discussions outside of the now toxified labels and gulilt by association.

Aww c'mon, people still care about all this nonsense? Just care about the games tbh...

As much as I agree with the principles behind GG, that term needs to be put down. If you want to talk about ethics, do it somewhere that doesn't have a GG tag...

I'm going to avoid addressing any of the ignorance in this thread, because theres not enough time in my day to argue with every ignorant person in a GG thread.

I will say, that if you want something kinda cool that came out of GG, look up #NotYourShield...I think gaming is an extremely inclusive hobby and that diversity is only growing.
