Forums - PC Discussion - AMD Offering Discounts To Former GTX 970 Owners Following Memory Controversy

Its dumb, ps4 is advertised as having 8gb of ram, dont see anyone returning it because the os reserves over 35% of that.
The card has 4gb as advertised, its just not all used for vram

Meamwhile they parade around saying buy our cards we are the good guys.

With all the desperation of a company wanting to shift current inventory before they make it obsolete and thus, harder to sell.

That's a brilliant!

Well played AMD.

Does AMD want to go bankrupt even quicker? they already lose money on the higher end cards due to trying to compete with Nvidia and now they want to lose even more money?

Wouldn't do it myself I've already lost 2 motherboards to AMD cards dieing and taking the motherboard with it won't risk it again no matter how cheap the AMD cards are.

I don't know nor do I care if they're losing money. The cards from both companies are great, they both have advantages and disadvantage over each other.Luckily we have the choice to decide which card to get based on the features  that appeal to us the most.

Well, then you probably should care if they're losing money. AMD staying alive and well is in both consumer's and Nvidia's best interest.

Yes, nVidia lied. But 970 still performs as initially benched on numerous sites, so I really don't see what's such a big fuss about.

I'm with you but you shouldn't play it down so much. What Nvidia did was clear fraud and they are absolute morons to think they could get away with it. The ridiculous thing is just the overreaction of the people, most of which aren't even affected by the defect.

Not downplaying it, just stating the facts. nVidia are complete idiots for trying to pull this off, but honestly, card has 4GB, it's just that last 512MB are slower (and according to some benchmarks, like on Guru3D, it's not really such a big issue, except for few higher latency spikes). Honestly, IMO, bigger lie was that card has 64 instead of revised 56 ROPs.

As for people saying that this 512 MB are so important for future proofing - I'd say if they want to be future proof, they better wait for 6GB cards, cause neither 3.5GB nor 4GB cards seem to me quite future proof.

Actually I'm actively pointing fingers and laughing at people who bought a 970 for SLI. I mean who does that?

But yeah, everyone has to just repeat the word RAM over and over because most people don't even know what memory bandwidth or ROPs are. It grinds on me as well. I mean if you want to condemn someone, at least educate yourself before.

Funny, the contrary  happenned to me, never had a problem with an AMD card, the 2 times I bought Nvidia cards they both crapped on me shortly after the warranty ended, the last one a 8800 gt didn't make collateral damage, but the other one took my mobo with it...

I don't get people that being lied to, can't "see what's such a big fuss about."

People eating this kind of sh*t are the reason why hardware/software makers are shoving unfinished or defective products down our throats!!!

Does any other GPU not have the specified ram available as vram?

It's misleading.

I think this is more an issue of the card manufacturers (i.e XFX, SAPPHIRE, ASUS, EVGA, MSI etc) than the processor manufacturers Nvidia vs. AMD.

but they did lie about memory bandwith, memory interface, L2 cache and ROP count
