Nintendo's logo is red, plus they're more synonymous with red, with mario n all.

Playstation has switched from 2011 to the Black Sony (make.believe/James Bondish) branding to a shinier blue

Hmm, didn't Nintendo adopt blue? Wiiu has blue cases and Wii branding was blue.

Playstation was red for a time but you're right, it's blue now.

It's a standard colour code convention; red for the evil side, blue/green for the good. :p

I've been wondering this for quite a while

Accidentally, was thinking about this just yesterday - it really doesn't makes much sense in its current form.

Those are JUST the case colours though. Sony and have pretty much gone all blue for branding, Inc vita. Nintendo are more white than anything else, but 3ds case is white, logo is red, main mascot is red, wii u games are blue. 

Actually, usually Red is the leader, and Blue and Green alternate between the Lancer and the comedic relief.
