Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Where did Majora's Mask get all this love?

For me it is no real Zelda with only 4 dungeons and the 3 day system makes the game very repetitive. Also collecting the fairies in each dungeon was very far from being fun and usually you do not get such important items for boring and stupid fetch quests in a Zelda game. The only positive thing about this game is the dark overall theme.

There's a Zelda Cycle part 2. Maybe you have not noticed, but there's lately a weird hate for OoT and a even more weird love for MM, TWW and TP.

I honestly don't know how to explain considering OoT is the more balanced one, while the others focus on certain aspects and forget about others.

Anyway, glad to see MM gets recongnition, but there's no way is the best Zelda.

You know what? I have noticed that lately. I never thought I would read "Ocarina of Time" and "overrated" in the same sentence but I have been reading that a lot more recently.

Because there wasn't a solid argument against it. Now people decided strength in numbers is good enough.

I think the argument is that, as someone who didn't play the game back when it came out, it just doesn't match up as well. I didn't play OoT until fairly recently and I felt that it just wasn't as good as...well any of the other 3D Zelda games I've played.

Maybe it has something to do with how people are generally more vocal when they disagree with something. Majora's Mask wasn't quite as critically acclaimed as a lot of other Zelda games, so the people who didn't like it as much have nothing to complain about, but the people who love it use every chance they get to say so.

EDIT: So yeah, I guess the upcoming remaster is a reason.

Maybe you weren't paying enough attention, the love has always been there, it's just been getting more mentions thanks to the remake.

For example: http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=9992&page=10

That thread is from 2007, 8 years ago, and Ocarina of Time was eliminated before Majora's Mask.

The actual best Zeldas are too mainstream. Reiterating that A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, and Wind Waker are amazing for the umpteen millionth time is not a good way to stand out.

People are also starting to catch on to how vastly ahead of its time Majora's Mask was, with its ho-hum level design and emphasis on making the player feel sad over providing them with independently engaging gameplay.

As you can see, it was chosen as the 5th best Zelda 10 years ago.

Also, from wikipedia:

Like its predecessor, the game garnered universal acclaim. Game Informer called the three-day cycle "one of the most inventive premises in all of gaming," and also stated that "[w]ithout question, Majora's Mask is the finest adventure the Nintendo 64 has to offer."[58] It is often regarded as the darkest and most original game inThe Legend of Zelda seriesEdge magazine referred to Majora's Mask as "the oddest, darkest and saddest of all Zelda games."[64] Opinions were favorable regarding how the game compares with predecessor Ocarina of Time, often cited as one of greatest video games of all time.[65] N64 Magazine ended their review by saying, "it was told that Majora's Mask should cower in the shadow of Ocarina of Time. Instead, it shines just as brightly," awarding the game 96%.[60] GameSpotsaid the game was much more difficult than its predecessor.[39] IGN described Majora's Mask as "The Empire Strikes Back of Nintendo 64...it's the same franchise, but it's more intelligent, darker, and tells a much better storyline."[4] GamePro characterized the story as "surreal and spooky, deep, and intriguing"[66] and the game as "living proof that the N64 still has its magic."[66] It has been ranked the seventh-greatest game by Electronic Gaming Monthly, whereas Ocarina of Time was ranked eighth.[67] Majora's Mask placed 68th on Game Informer 's "Top 100 Games of All Time" in 2001[68] and 63rd on their "Top 200 Games of All Time" in 2009.[69] Nintendo Power rated it the fifteenth-best game on a Nintendo console.[70] The game placed 45th in Official Nintendo Magazine's 100 greatest Nintendo games of all time.[71] GameFAQs users ranked Majora's Mask 47th in a list of 100 best games of all-time in 2005.[72]

This is my view as well. I've played all the 3D Zeldas in the past year except for MM, and OoT is probably my second to least favorite, only ahead of TP. It does many things well, but it's just not my favorite. And it has nothing to do with it being "overrated."

The Wind Waker isn't mainstream. It would actually be the better example to use for your trolling of Majora's Mask.

Praise for Wind Waker is currently mainstream thanks to the Zelda Cycle and the recent remake.

Soon Majora's Mask will become too popular and half of its fanbase will probably move on to other Zelda games. Hopefully they don't all congregate around the same one again.

Aye, 10 years ago, before Twilight Princess, Minish Cap, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, Skyward Sword, and Link Between Worlds were released, it was ranked 5th out of 10 Zelda games. A middling entry. Ocarina, Wind Waker, Link to the Past, and even the NES original were recognized as its betters.

Nothing to see here.
