Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Where did Majora's Mask get all this love?

5 years ago, you'd go online and people would barely mention it in their top 5 Zeldas, and when it came out many Zelda fans were disappointed a bit.

I know Wind Waker eventually grew a huge fanbase when people finally accepted the graphics, but Majora's Mask's fanbase kinda came out of nowhere. It's like one year it became super popular. I think it's a great game still, but it kinda reminds me that one time when everyone was like "Final Fantasy VI is way better than VII!" out of nowhere as well.

I would say it's nostalgia, but when I read the comments a lot of people didn't play it back when it came out (I did by the way!). Plus, wouldn't they also be nostalgic for Ocarina of Time? It was way more popular and came out only 2 years before. Maybe it's the darker story perhaps?

I don't know, what do you guys think? What has made Majora's Mask so popular recently?

By the way I am excited for the 3DS remake too I haven't played it since it came out in 2000 and I am getting kinda nostalgic about it as well. I forgot most of the game. On the other hand I have beaten Ocarina of Time once every year since I first beat it in 1999. I consider Ocarina the greatest game of all time (and my only 11/10).

Excellent question.... I have absolutely no idea. Could be the f'ed up story, but who knows....

i've always regarded it as the best 3D Zelda i don't know when/if others suddenly changed their minds.

I have no idea I think it's by far the worst 3d one. I have no idea where to go most of the time lol. I think it's because of precisely what you said about it not having a huge fanbase. So basically people wanted to be non-conformist or whatever and started picking the "under appreciated" one as their favorite.

I attribute its newfound love to Let's Plays and forums. It's also that fans of Zelda are more open to change now than when MM was released, so they have appreciation for the more unconventional entries like WW and MM.

There's a Zelda Cycle part 2. Maybe you have not noticed, but there's lately a weird hate for OoT and a even more weird love for MM, TWW and TP.

I honestly don't know how to explain considering OoT is the more balanced one, while the others focus on certain aspects and forget about others.

Anyway, glad to see MM gets recongnition, but there's no way is the best Zelda.

You know what? I have noticed that lately. I never thought I would read "Ocarina of Time" and "overrated" in the same sentence but I have been reading that a lot more recently.

I'd file it under "Vocal minority".
