What are those expectations? What are the influx of Japanese-only/PS4-only games?

People believed that PS4 would take the Japanese market by storm but it only did below average. I'm worried it won't even reach 10 million in the 8 years it took for PS3

What people? My recollection of discussions this time last year was that home consoles is a much diminished market in Japan. People, including myself, we're predicting that no home console would sell 10 million this generation. By my reading of the Japan market PS4 is doing OK.

Which has already been pointed out to you - unlike the PS3, it didn't release during a holiday period. That can't be ignored. Despite all of that, it hasn't fallen too far behind it. Can't make any realistic judgment calls without seeing what it will do with the proper software, anyway. So, the talk of, "reaching 10 million" is pointless.

It reaching under 10 million isn't pointless its realistic. 3DS despite being the top selling platform with the highest selling games in the region is falling below its predecessor. It's not unreasonable to assume that PS4 will be in the same boat after all its AAA games get released.

I'm not saying that I think that they're going to sell 10 million PS4s in Japan. I'm just saying you that the current PS4 sales do not show one way or another what the PS4's end-of-life sales will be at. Especially considering that there aren't a lot of games for it. I personally only have 2 games for the PS4, and I've owned it since January of 2014. I wish I wouldn't have bought the PS4 when I did since it's really been a paperweight. That has nothing to do with the console, and everything to do with the software (what CGI-Quality has been talking about).

This is not great. PS4 is still tracking WAY behind the Dreamcast in Japan and the Dreamcast had a notoriously slow first 6 months in terms of software (it launched with only four games!).

I think it will be 3m by the end of 2015.

A large amount if people hyping the PS4 launch that also bashed Wii U sales in the region the year prior

good for ps4
and @wii u comments
only reason why wii u didnt hit 1 million sooner is square enix didnt make dragon quest 10 excluisve(wii u would be almost at 3 million if that happen)

An apples-to-oranges comparison. Look at how much has changed there since 1999/2000.

Edit: Come to think of it, the Dreamcast did just 2.25m in its life. The PS4 will outsell it by quite a bit.

While I am sure the PS4 will surpass the Dreamcast in Japan, the pace is not exactly encouraging for the future of home consoles in Japan. One can hope that it is because of the Western-centric lineup of the PS4 so far, but they have certainly bought systems in the past without a lot of games available, Japanese or otherwise.

I can't be arsed to actually dig up Kent's Ultimate History book from my closet, but the Wikipedia article on the Dreamcast cites his book and states that the Dreamcast sold 8-900k systems in its first three months on the market in Japan. Unless it only sold 1-200k over the next seven months, the PS4 is WAY behind. (During those seven months, Shenmue and Soul Calibur were released as well.)
